<p><font size="1"> Camden Council Leader Jane Roberts has said that
the Government should call a halt to its 'war' on drugs. Police
should tone down their enforcement of laws against cannabis and
ecstasy and heroin should be prescribed to addicts. </font></p>
<p><font size="1">The recommendations came in a submission to the
House of Commons home affairs select committee which is investigating
current drugs policy. This week the Government reclassified cannabis
from a class B drug to class C. </font></p>
<p><font size="1">The submission was put together by Cllr Roberts
who represents Castlehaven ward, Cllr Richard Arthur, executive
member for community safety and representative for Highgate and
Council Chief Executive Steve Bundred. </font></p>
<p><font size="1">Speaking to the Ham & High, Cllr Roberts said: "We
are not saying that these drugs are harmless, we are just saying
that the focus needs to be on the harder drugs which cause the most
harm." </font></p>
<p><font size="1">But the leader of Camden Conservative group, Piers
Wauchope, said: "People will be quite shocked by the suggestion
that Camden should endorse recreational drugs and heroin addicts
should be given free heroin." </font></p>

<p><font size="1"> Trading Standard's officers raided two shops in
Eversholt Street, Camden, and found hundreds of pornographic videos,
CD-Roms and DVDs. Mark Conway of Edmonton, North London, and Steven
Perrin of Billericay, Essex, last week pleaded guilty at Highbury
Corner Magistrates' Court to charges of 'supplying' and 'having
in possession for supply' 300 unclassified pornographic items. The
two shops at 40 and 68 Eversholt Street were raided in May 2000.
</font></p>
<p><font size="1">Des Campbell, Trading Standards Chief Officer, said,
"We don't go easy on people who supply unclassified material in
Camden. Our dedicated Trading Standards' Team are looking to secure
a prosecution every time. We're making a difference with eight recent
successful prosecutions." </font></p>
<p><font size="1">Mark Conway was fined �450 with �800 costs and Steven
Perrin was fined �450 with �500 costs. </font></p>

<p><font size="1"> Sulayman Zain-ul-Abidin (43), a suspected terror
instructor who has an office in Camden has been arrested as part
of a wider investigation into London groups with alleged terrorist
links. </font></p>
<p><font size="1">He is being questioned at the Paddington Green high-security
police station about offences connected with raising money for a
banned terrorist organisation, the Islamic Jihad Group. </font><font size="1">The
company based at the office is Sakina Security Ltd and it advertises
a variety of services on its website including weapons training
in the USA for Muslim youths. </font></p>
<p><font size="1">One section of the website, entitled the Ultimate
Jihad Challenge, describes a two week course for young people "on
our 1,000-acre state of the art shooting range in the United States",
which involves firing up to 3,000 rounds of mixed calibre ammunition.
The company also claims it has sent fighters to Afghanistan and
Chechnya. </font></p>
