If you live west-side and value good quality red meat on a menu, this is the perfect restaurant choice. Popeseye Steakhouse does exactly what it says on the tin, serving up excellent grass-fed Aberdeen Angus, hung for a minimum of 14 days and butchered as three cuts (rump, sirloin, fillet) in five sizes (from 6oz to 30oz). All steaks are served with chips, salad comes at an additional price, and that’s pretty much it. A desert menu is on hand if you need a sugar rush and the wine menu has a good selection of international bottles.

From the same stable as The Ivy and J Sheekey, Rivington Grill makes some careful and somewhat delicious selections for inclusion on their mod-British menu. This is all about back-to-basics cooking, delivering up all manner of heritage dishes which aim to please even the hardiest palate. All dishes feature seasonal, nationally sourced ingredients, which culminate in service throughout the entire day – from breakfast through to evening deserts. Alongside a glass topped interior and mezzanine dinning area, the Ubiquitous Chip surely must be the jewel in the Glaswegian gastro crown. With a long history of serving quality Scottish food (going as far back as 1971) the place has earnt all manner of awards and prestige on the national dining agenda. Here you can bed down with haggis (venison and vegetarian options available), salt ling, pig’s cheeks, suet puds and Scotch fillet steak. There's excellent regional cheeses on offer and at £19.25 for three courses and a glass of fizz, the Sunday lunch is hard to beat.

I have to say that I don’t really like the foulmouthed man, plus recent rumours suggest boil-in-the-bag tendencies, however his venture at Royal Hospital Road deserves a mention on any west London restaurant guide. The menu offers a wonderful selection of delights, from ravioli of lobster and sautéed foie gras to start, through to oven roasted pigeon and roasted Barbary duck for main course. The wine cellar is cause for celebration in its own right, where vintage Bordeaux and crisp Riesling ride high.

In the past year the Martin brothers (of The Gun and The Well fame) have brought The Botanist screaming onto the West London gastro scene with all guns blazing. Named after the famous botanist Sir Hans Sloane, the interior carries a naturalistic theme with understated décor complemented by flora and fauna inspired artwork. Alongside a distinctly British/French dinner menu – think foie gras, gazpacho and parfait, there’s generally a menu on offer for all occasions. The breakfast menu is famous in its own right, with bucks fizz, cepès and pancakes riding high, whilst an afternoon tea menu is on hand for weary shoppers and a pre-theatre menu offers up a delicious and affordable alternative to the full blown à la carte option.

A very stylish feature on the Glaswegian Scottish eating scene, Arisaig offers a two tiered dining experience, depending on your mood. The brasserie and terrace downstairs are a relaxed affair, with fresh soup, oatmeal nettle leaf and bean fritters, and spicy chicken and haggis meatballs on the menu, amongst other delicious choices. There's also a children’s menu on offer and the terrace is a great place to kick back and sample some of the beauties on the whisky list. Upstairs, the Balcony serves up a competitive menu, the Arisaig Seaboard steals the show with langoustines, oysters, salmon and more, in a slightly more formal atmosphere.

Good honest Thai dishes served up in authentic canteen style surroundings. There are set meals on offer, delicious curries and of course of obligatory pancakes, which are a must for anyone with a sweet tooth. The excellent prices match the fast and efficient service, which means this place is generally heaving, so be ready to queue to for a table.

Don’t let the traditional façade fool you, the North Pole is hiding quite the contemporary destination inside. Alongside a bar, there’s the piano restaurant (quite the up and coming these days – apparently) and the South Pole Club. A pretty good cocktail menu serves up some rather tasty options, whilst the all-day dining menu offers some sustenance via good risottos and platters. The club is pretty blooming sleek, all clean lines and sharp lighting, with rota of resident DJ’s pulling tunes out of the bag from Thurs – Sun.
