<p><font size="1"><b>Mario Testino is one of fashion's most sought-after
and charismatic photographers, whose very name is synonymous with
images of glamour, style and pure joie de vivre.</b> </font></p>
<p><font size="1">Based in London, Testino travels extensively for
international fashion magazines including American, British, French,
and Italian Vogue, The Face and Vanity Fair, whilst his work as
a fashion photographer has been exhibited widely in Europe and Japan.</font></p>
<p><font size="1">If the rich and powerful in the past sought to have
their image immortalised by portrait painters, then in the early
21st century the artist of choice is Testino. Blurring the distinction
between fashion and portraiture. His subjects are the A-Z of the
celebrity world, from Princess Diana, to Kate Moss and Madonna.</font></p>

<p><font size="1">His work may be commerce rather than 'art' but then
portraiture has always been tied to commerce, politics, power &
privilege, so in many ways he is a perfect modern-day choice for
the National Portrait Gallery. </font></p>
<p><font size="1">Testino's images often show his glamourous subjects
in relaxed demenour, offering us an intimacy with them denied by
more posed images. Somehow we feel that we are getting close to
what it might feel like to be with that person, the 'atmosphere'
of the encounter. </font></p>
<p><font size="1">The images are of course highly choreographed, with
a large team of assistants helping 'Super Mario' in his work. Like
a good film director however, Testino manages to manufacture the
perfect artificial situation where real emotion can be played out.</font></p>
<p><font size="1">Perhaps Testino's own celebrity too, acts in his
favour. When you've made even more beautiful the world's most beautiful
people, even someone like Princess Diana must have felt flattered
by Testino's attentions. </font><font size="1">How many photographers
would have had the temerity to ask Diana to remove her shoes for
him? And what better perfect way to create an atmosphere of intimacy
with a precious put-upon princess.</font></p>

<p><font size="1">This exhibition, Testino's first at a major London
institution, brings together over 120 colour and black-and-white
portraits in which he captures current icons of fashion, film, music
and style. British stars including Robbie Williams, Catherine Zeta
Jones and Liz Hurley, as well as a large number of Hollywood's youngest
stars.</font></p>
<p><font size="1">Special sections of the exhibition are devoted to
Kate Moss, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Madonna, as well as Testino's portraits
of Diana, Princess of Wales, photographed shortly before her death
in 1997. </font></p>
