<h3><span style="color: #333333;">Design Students Promoting Berry Good Health at Gardening Scotland</span></h3>
<p>‘A sweet way of tackling Scotland’s health problems’. That was how SAC Garden Design student Anne Nurmiranta described her team’s entry in the Show Garden section of this year’s Garden Scotland Event.</p>
<p>It will be held on the Ingliston show ground in early June. Their Cornucopia, Horn of Plenty, design will overflow with fruits and berries that not only thrive in Scottish conditions but deliver real health and nutrition benefits.<br/> Berries from northern climes contain high levels of phenolic compounds and cancer fighting anti-oxidants that keep us healthy. Studies have shown that a handful of berries a day enhances liver function. Even dried or frozen berries retain their beneficial qualities and help provide nutrition all year.</p>
<p>“The health effects of berries have long been studied in my home country of Finland”, says Anne. “Gathering berries is part of our healthy, outdoor tradition. This show garden aims to draw attention to what Scotland can do and support the activity already going on here. Many people don’t realise what fun it can be to go out and pick some of the amazing wild berries that grow here and Scottish breeders and growers are also producing superb garden plants. People should know more about them”.</p>
<p>The seven HND Garden Design Students study at SAC’s Edinburgh Campus: Finn Anne Nurmiranta, planting designer Bernice Keegan, fundraiser Monica Cessford, Christine Jones is web co-ordinator, Paul Thomas hard landscaping specialist, Daniel Harris is one of the plant care group alongside Spaniard Roberto Arribas.</p>
<p>The group all acknowledge the tremendous help they have received from growers in Tayside Angus and beyond. They have been particularly grateful for the expert advice received from the Hutton Institute in Dundee which has a worldwide reputation for breeding raspberries and other fruits as well as research into their health benefits.</p>
<p>SAC offers a comprehensive range of courses in horticulture and garden design, including the HND in Garden Design. They range from Higher National Certificate and Diploma through to Degree and Honours Degree. Courses can be studied full time or part time.</p>
