<h2> ERIS trains Algerian journalists in good media practice</h2>

<div id="newstext"> As the Algerian media environment becomes increasingly open and pluralistic, it is crucial to support fledgling media outlets as they develop. <br/><br/>Since August 2012, ERIS has been working in partnership with the independent television station EChorouk to train journalists in good practice in the media, and to increase public engagement through ‘Polyweek’, the station’s political debate show. <br/><br/><img width="389" height="294" src="../images/userfiles/Image/Algeria media training photo_1_.jpg" alt=""/><br/><font size="1">Filming 'Polyweek' in EChorouk studios (Photo: Magdi Abdelhadi)</font><br/><br/>The project aimed to increase EChorouk’s capacity to produce balanced, well-informed political programming<span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span>that makes a positive contribution to public discourse within a dynamic debate show format. <br/><br/>In 2014 ERIS trained the station’s newsroom staff on interviewing skills and moderating, and implemented a mentoring scheme in which two senior experts – Magdi Abdelhadi, formerly of the BBC, and <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/sunday_am/7061382.stm">Barney Jones</a>, Political Editor of the Andrew Marr Show – worked directly with ‘Polyweek’ staff. <br/><br/>ERIS was able to bring a live studio audience in the show and increase its use of social media. As a result of the project, EChorouk is now better equipped to deliver interactive and engaging political programming that is balanced, responsibly produced and sensitive to the domestic context. The final report on the project will be publicly available soon.<br/><br/>The project was funded by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office's <a href="https://www.gov.uk/arab-partnership-participation-fund">Arab Partnership Participation Fund</a>.</div>
