Twitter is a difficult platform to get the hang of, but a common courtesy of thanking someone can make the difference between someone remaining as a loyal follower and removing you from their list of people they are following.

Gaining followers is difficult, but keeping followers is, if anything more important, bares more fruitful rewards and also is a harder task. One thing you can do to help keep your followers is thanking them for the little things, and the first would be for following you.

When you get a new follower, you receive an email notification to say who has followed you, all you have to do now is simply mention them in a tweet and say thank you. Maybe even ask them how they are. This will begin a conversation which will engage your followers individually, creating the start of a relationship. For example, on my laustin SEO Twitter profile, I write “#Shoutout to my new followers :” and list all of my new followers, and if i have enough space, i ask them how they are. This gives the followers both recognition and publicity for following me, it is a win win situation for everyone.

Twitter is all about conversation, and if you want to increase your followers and the amount of followers who are actually interested in your opinions and so on. By talking to them individually from the word go, you create the opportunity to have a relationship with your followers and become a source of reliable information, which will bring in even more followers.

Ever Googled yourself? We all know we have and chances are you have found another random person who just happens to have your name. You think to yourself that you should be up there and would love to be on page 1. Just so you can show off in front of your friends.

So how do you optimise yourself to be on page 1? You can’t, but what you can do is optimise one of your social media profiles. The way to do this is through link building. One of the easiest ways to do this is link from your site to your social media profile with the anchor text of your full name. If you do not have a site of your own, try guest blogging on other people’s sites or using the website known as MyBlogGuest where you can submit your articles and include the anchor text to your profiles.

In the majority of cases, not many people will be optimising their social media profiles for their name because they would not generate any business out of it. This is purely vanity and just something you can show off to people.

If you are not such a good writer then the only other thing you can do is purchase link building services, but I think the fact that you are page 1 for your name is not worth purchasing the link building services. It is worth writing some articles and including your social media profiles as the correct anchor text.

Most guest posting sites will let you link to a website and your social media profiles, so you can optimise not only your social media profile, but other sites at the same time, which will no doubt help to increase your SEOcampaign and the results that it will bring.

Conclusion

Optimising your profiles is something to do because you can, it can be used to help with social media, but unless you’re famous there is no point because there is probably a low amount of people searching for you. So it is fairly simple to optimise your profiles for your name due to the low competition.

Optimising your social media profile is very similar to a website. There are fields like bio and name which are like the page title and description, but the main advantage is that if you are regularly using these profiles, then your page will have fresh and regular content, which Google loves. So how do you make the most of this opportunity?

Firstly, these profiles will naturally rank quite high when searching the name of the profile in Google. If there is a consistency in the profile names, for example all of our profiles are named either SEO Positive or SEO Positive LTD, these naturally rank. However, if we want our Twitter, Facebook and Google plus profiles to pop up when someone searches the name SEO Positive, how do we do that?

Link building, it is a very simple technique that works with websites and also social media profiles. If you or your company has a blog, throw a link in to your profile, for example you can mention the word Twitter, and link your Twitter profile to that. If you want to take the more extreme route, you can use an anchor text link with your business name. This is the best thing you can do to optimise your profiles. By making an effort of linking to your profiles in each of your blogs, even if they are guest posts, then your profiles will rank higher because of this.

Having your social media profiles rank higher is great for things like reputation management, because it makes your profiles more visible to potential customers which will not only help increase your following, but also help your customers get to know you and your company a little better.

Conclusion

Because your own company name is not a very competitive key term, so you should see results quite soon, and if you make a conscious effort to send links in the direction of your social media profiles, then your profiles will stay up there and not only help build your fan base or following, but help build and maintain your current reputation.

If you were to try and use Twitter to help link build for your site, you would be called insane because Twitter make all of their links no follow. What if there was a way that you could use you Twitters’ content, to create a website and link out from that website to your own site which is in need of inbound links.

Twylah is an ingenious idea that has been long awaited. The site pulls all of your content from Twitter and organises it into topics which is based on keywords in the mini blogs. Twylah also shows what topics are trending with each user. According to Twylah, my trending topics are: SEO, Google, Facebook, Brand, Social Media and Google +. That sounds fairly accurate to me.

Besides Twylahs’ clever trending feature, it has much higher potential. I myself guest blog quite frequently, and have made a constant effort to link build to my Twylah page to help increase the worth of that site in Googles’ eyes. My Twylah page has a PR of 1, however I have also been link building to SEO Positive’s Twylah page and they have a PR of 3! This must be due to where the links are coming from because the SEO Positive page has a few links going to the page where as my laustinseo Twylah page currently has none. This must be due to SEO Positives PR of 5.

So if your Twylah page does have a relatively high PR, then you can begin to use it. The first and most obvious would be to link to pages that need more attention in terms of search engine optimisation, this is what would naturally happen, but also you could begin to sell a link going from your Twylah page, to someone elses and it can become an outgoing link service, all from your Twitter feed. There are a lot of possibilities with Twylah, and as your page progresses, its’ worth will increase.

Make the Decision to Use Competwition!

October 27th, 2011

Competwition is a brilliant website that is heavily dependent on the social networking phenomenon that is Twitter. Competwition, for those who haven’t guessed already, is an integration of competition and Twitter, which is Competwition in a nutshell.

Running contests on social media has always been one method of earning followers, and it most likely always will be. There is only one problem with running contests and that is for the social media campaigns that have just started, these contests go unnoticed. Competwition is a great site that displays your contest.

So How Does It Work?

Competwition allows different text to be entered, such as a description and even a tweet out message, also there is a legality section. You can add an image of the prize too! Once you create your contest, you send it off to be reviewed, now I had some trouble with this but one of the employees (Mark Bowering) responded to my submission and really helped me. He even submitted a new and improved version of the contest for me.

When your contest is live it will appear in the list of running contests on the competwition site, sometimes they will even tweet that you have been added to the listings. The contests that end soonest will appear on the first page and the competitions with a longer wait time will be towards the end.

If someone does enter your contest, they automatically follow your twitter account (you can choose any account you want), they also follow the Competwition Twitter account, AND they tweet a message of your choice, including a link to the contest.

The Results

Using this service really proved fruitful for my Twitter account, I ran the contest for a month and it still has four days left, in that space of time, Competwition has brought me 232 followers. There is no question that using Competwition has been an extremely beneficial process, and I will definitely continue to run contests through this site.

Just for comparison, before I started using Competwition, I had roughly 30 followers, but now, I have 234. Not to mention that there is still four days left on my contest, so I expect the numbers to creep up a little more.

Conclusion

Competwition is a great tool for increasing your following, it is something that everyone who is running a competition for their social media campaign should not only be aware of, but become a user of Competwition. It is a free service and if you’re running a contest, it will help massively to get the ball rolling, so without further ado, here is the link to Competwition https://competwition.com.

Twitter, once easily dismissed in its early days by critics who didn’t see past users posting what they had for lunch, has become a worldwide phenomenon, and one of the most useful cornerstones of social networking.

Twitter does take some getting used to, because the postings, called tweets, are all very short, limited to 140 characters per tweet, and there are some conventions that can look odd to the uninitiated. For example, the @ sign refers to the account name, the # tag is how you can follow topics.

Tweets can keep you up to the minute with your friends, your family and the community at large. Follow a favorite celebrity, or keep an eye out on local politics or events. It’s also one of the best things for instantaneous news during big events like earthquakes — it’s like on the spot reporting from anybody who can get online or has a phone. If there’s a fire in your neighborhood, there’s a good chance someone will be tweeting information about it within minutes, and sometimes with pictures.

Beyond keeping up with what your friends are up to, Twitter can make it easy to keep updated with things beyond your social circle. Sometimes, large companies will keep an eye out for customer service issues from people who tweet about them, and can be one of the easiest ways to get problems resolved. Twitter users are often the first to know about upcoming concerts and other popular events. If there’s a local issue you need to keep up with, see if your local newspaper’s website is posting Twitter feeds from a knowledgeable reporter, who can offer real-time updates and insight that would be difficult to find anywhere else.

You can simply access the Twitter website in your browser, but there are tools such as TweetDeck or HootSuite that can make following people and topics easier, in addition to helping with your own tweets. You can read and post tweets using your computer, a tablet or your cellular phone.

If you are completely new to Twitter, simply sign up for an account, and look for some interesting people to follow, whether it’s someone you know personally, or a famous figure you would enjoy following. See who they follow, what topics they’re interested in, and soon you’ll find yourself deeply immersed in the world of Twitter. Twitter is social networking at its best, bringing the people and topics you care about to you whenever you like.

There are so many things that businesses can (and do) do wrong when it comes to using social media.

Perhaps the biggest offense and the most common one is to believe that your customers don’t realize what you’re doing when you promote a product or a service or a business affiliate on your company Twitter account or Facebook page.

Believe me - it’s obvious. As a business, don’t get so involved in your own social media world that you forget that Twitter and Facebook have been around for a long time - heck, they made a movie about Facebook, and Zuckerburg was on the cover of Time Magazine. Don’t think people are stupid when it comes to understanding the ways in which businesses use social media. Especially if your target audience is in their twenties. Talk to them, and they could probably tell you better than you think what you can and should be doing with social media.

In fact, many of them could tell you what works - and the ins and outs and etiquette - of Facebook and Twitter better than the “social media expert” that you’ve hired that tells you that you need more Facebook advertisements. It’s not a hard and fast number, but Facebook ads don’t usually result in more than a 1% return - it’s white noise and people ignore it.

The point of social media is not to push your new product to death - to be that obnoxious commercial you see on TV that you have to switch the channel for - social media is about, well, being…social. If that isn’t a concept you can understand, then maybe you should hold off on participating in Facebook and Twitter. It’s networking with customers, getting to know them, asking questions and engaging - seeing what their honest opinion is on your product or service or company and proactively doing something about it.

If you do decide to run promotions or sales or some sort of special on your Facebook or Twitter account, be transparent about it. As I’ve mentioned - you’ll offend and turn more customers away if you treat them like they can’t understand what you’re doing, like you assume that because you’re a business on Facebook you can utilize and understand the platform so much better than everyone else. Don’t alienate your own customers. That’s bad idea number one.

And if all you do is run promotions, people will start drifting away from your social media presence - treating you like just another advertisement, and shoving you into a corner of your minds where they ignore you and your “message.” Your social media campaign just becomes white noise to a disheartened public.

To really work with social media in your company, you need to have a social media team - not just an intern that doesn’t really understand your company mission but is “good with Twitter.” You need people monitoring conversations, communicate with each other and you and make sure you have a strong, integrated front to present to the world. You need to get involved, get your hands dirty and not be afraid of losing face.

One of the most stunning examples of this is from Morton’s Steakhouse. A loyal customer (who also happened to be big CEO and have 10K or so followers on Twitter) tweeted from the airport that he wouldn’t have time to eat after he landed in his destination, and would Morton’s please get him a steak and drop it off at his arrival airport?

And you know what? They did. Even though the tweet was a joke, and not something the tweeter seriously considered would happen, it did. This is the kind of thing, as a business, you want to do with social media. Impress people. Go above and beyond, and do it consistently. Listen. Improve. Ask questions, and offer rewards.

It’s been little over a year since Twitter launched its advertisement services and according to a report by eMarketer, since the introduction of their Promoted Products offerings in April 2010, the number of advertisers using the Twitter platform have increased at a steady pace. As of June 2011, there were 600 advertisers promoting their products through the Promoted Products service, representing a significant increase over the past six months in marketers utilizing the service.

What are promoted products?

Promoted Products consist of three main areas:

Promoted Tweets: These are keyword-targeted, cost-per-click ads that are displayed in all the Twitter search results.

Promoted Trends:

These are advertisements that appear under the ‘Trend’ section of a Twitter page and are charged on a flat-rate basis. If a trend has been promoted it will feature a ‘promoted’ icon next to it.

Promoted Accounts:

According to a Twtter representaive, Twitter is using some pretty sophisticated algorithms that suggest Promoted Accounts based on criteria found the user profiles of those they publically follow.

For example, if a user follows a large amount of automobile-related accounts, Twitter may suggest that you follow @volvo, if you don’t already do so.

Are they effective for advertisers?

If the advertisers themselves are to be believed, yes and no.

Virgin America reported a massive increase in sales as a result of their activity on the promoted products platform and, according to Asian tech catalogue Penn Olson, their promoted tweets significantly contributed to helping them achieve their fifth highest sales day in the entire history of the airline.

According to Ad Age after forking out for promoted tweets on Twitter Volkswagen reached a 52% engagement rate after tweets promoting the launch of their new model of beetle were published on the site.

According to Investor.com, Covario, search marketing specialists, tested the promoted tweets functionality with a client. According to them “the click-through rates were paltry.”

How are they being received by the marketing community?

It appears that the jury is out on this one. A TWTCON, oneforty survey of 110 marketers revealed that those interested in using Twitter Promoted Products was very much a mixed bag, with the responses being evenly distributed across the categories involving those who would, and would not, consider using promoted products as a marketing tool.

Our View

At present the Twitter Promoted Products platform is really a service that is limited to the big guys. The high cost of advertisements on this channel means that it’s very difficult for the smaller businesses to make any real headway.

Very little is understood about the click through rates that the adverts receive and whether smaller, unknown brands would receive the same attention that the bigger brands do.

However, Twitter clearly are trying to address some of these problems and the platform is in beta, afterall. They are beginning to utilize more geo-targeted ads that may be suitable for smaller businesses and they are looking at lower cost advertising options. We expect things will continue to evolve at a lightening speed at Twitter over the forthcoming months and expect to see more and more offerings that may just tempt the SMB crowd.

Twitter can be used as a good marketing tool. However, there are things which can be done in order to increase its traffic and hence become more effective. The higher the traffic gets to your account, the more it is desired as it will reach to many people.

The username selected to be chosen should be one that is very relevant to the topic of discussion. The need to have a good username will make it possible for those users searching for specific topics to be able to locate your profile. Then on twitter, you should not be following others but you should be getting others to follow you instead. This should be done as many have fallen victims to just becoming followers and not realizing of the benefit they would gain from twitter by having others follow them. This means that, to increase your traffic and have people following you instead so as to have them get to know about some product you would want them to know. This however does not mean that, you just stop following others completely.

Another way to increase your traffic on twitter is ensuring that, you do regular posting to probably three or four accounts. This will automatically make a broader reach of those who will see the posting and probably do the following. In order to have multiple twitter accounts, one will be required to have several email accounts to enable multiple accounts on twitter. The good thing is that, it will increase the view and following on twitter and as a result, will encourage many to follow. Then on these multiple accounts, one should be able to post probably three times a day and ensuring that the posting are interesting to read in order to have the much desired following.

In the endeavor to increase the traffic, it will be necessary to use a very good and pleasing description which will motivate a person to read more. This is just as one would desire to have a good article title, so should one choose a desirable description. This will increase the number of following than it would have been if one just placed a link to the article. The post again should remain relevant to the content you are dealing with.

It will also be for the benefit of the owner, it he or she goes to the extent of looking for those like-minded people so that, they can do business with them and share out their ideas. The more you have a lot of activities going on through your account, the more will be the traffic and consequently is the reaching out of the desire message about your product.

Social Sites

Social Sites have become widely popular over the past decade gaining membership in the hundreds of millions. The two most common social sites are Facebook and Twitter but it is important to note that most people join several different social sites. When you are trying to gather the largest amount of contacts, it is vital that you stay active in all of the major social sites and not just Facebook and Twitter.

Other Important Social Sites

While Facebook and Twitter may have the largest following, there are many social sites that have large memberships that should not be forgotten. Here is a list of five social sites that you should consider becoming an active member of:

YouTube

YouTube is a social site that is dedicated to showcasing videos of practically everything you can think of. With eighty-four million viewers every day, this is definitely not a site you want to miss. A video message can be spread very quickly throughout the world, letting your message be shared instantly.

Linkedln

Linkedln is a business-oriented social website that currently has over one hundred million members. This site allows business professionals to basically post their resume and credentials on their profile. This site can be used to help members gather contacts, potential clients or job offers. In the business world having a Linkedln profile has become a vital step.

Myspace

Myspace was one of the first social sites to hit the web. Although, overshadowed by the creation of Facebook, many people created their initial profile with Myspace. Most people claim to still keep their Myspace account active and login regularly. Myspace has revamped their website and are said to have over forty million new users each month.

Groupon

Groupon is a business-oriented website that works to give business a venue to display their products. They post deal-of-the-day offers allowing members to view their product and decide if they want to take the deal or not. Whether the deal is officially offered is dependent on how many people agree to take the offer. This is a great site for promoting a business and its products.

Foursquare

Although Foursquare currently only has eight million users compared to Facebook’s six hundred million users, the site is considered to be up and coming. They are a social media site that is geared toward mobile phone users. This site is believed by many to expand in the coming years as more people are using their smartphones for social networking.

Don’t Limit Yourself

The important thing to consider as you decide what social sites to join is how well you want to be connected. As with anything, people have their favorite social sites, the ones they turn to on a daily basis. For the greatest social networking abilities, you will not want to limit yourself to just Facebook and Twitter but you should join any social site that has millions of users every day. By joining multiple sites, you will be able to gather the maximum amount of contacts possible.
