Ever Googled yourself? We all know we have and chances are you have found another random person who just happens to have your name. You think to yourself that you should be up there and would love to be on page 1. Just so you can show off in front of your friends.

So how do you optimise yourself to be on page 1? You can’t, but what you can do is optimise one of your social media profiles. The way to do this is through link building. One of the easiest ways to do this is link from your site to your social media profile with the anchor text of your full name. If you do not have a site of your own, try guest blogging on other people’s sites or using the website known as MyBlogGuest where you can submit your articles and include the anchor text to your profiles.

In the majority of cases, not many people will be optimising their social media profiles for their name because they would not generate any business out of it. This is purely vanity and just something you can show off to people.

If you are not such a good writer then the only other thing you can do is purchase link building services, but I think the fact that you are page 1 for your name is not worth purchasing the link building services. It is worth writing some articles and including your social media profiles as the correct anchor text.

Most guest posting sites will let you link to a website and your social media profiles, so you can optimise not only your social media profile, but other sites at the same time, which will no doubt help to increase your SEOcampaign and the results that it will bring.

Conclusion

Optimising your profiles is something to do because you can, it can be used to help with social media, but unless you’re famous there is no point because there is probably a low amount of people searching for you. So it is fairly simple to optimise your profiles for your name due to the low competition.

SEOs world wide would have been redirected to the dreaded page of the “site explorer update” In a nutshell, this service is no more and we are going to have to find another place to locate a reliable source of backlinks.

We were all told that Yahoo site explorer was going to be closed down at some point, but it has come to a shock to all SEO’s of the world. Such a massively used and reliable tool is now no more.

Yahoo have said that Yahoo search has been merged with Bings’ Webmaster tools. For many toolbars such as SEO Book, this has caused a massive problem. Beforehand, we had the ease of viewing the amount of backlinks a page had, without even having to open up another browser.

What Is Next?

It is fair to say that Yahoo! Are finished and this site explorer integration to Bing was the last step. SEO’s will have to find a new source of information to base their research on, this will prove to be a difficult task, especially because Yahoo was free and provided excellent results. This could lead to many SEO companies having to go down the route of purchasing software which was once not needed but could now be an essential factor of any SEO business.

The integration into Bings’ Webmaster tools could prove to be a good thing, however this may not completely take off because it may be unable to include into a toolbar like it was for Yahoo site explorer. Fingers cross that there is something that can be done on the situation, because SEO’s will be feeling the burn of an essential tool being snatched away.

Optimising your social media profile is very similar to a website. There are fields like bio and name which are like the page title and description, but the main advantage is that if you are regularly using these profiles, then your page will have fresh and regular content, which Google loves. So how do you make the most of this opportunity?

Firstly, these profiles will naturally rank quite high when searching the name of the profile in Google. If there is a consistency in the profile names, for example all of our profiles are named either SEO Positive or SEO Positive LTD, these naturally rank. However, if we want our Twitter, Facebook and Google plus profiles to pop up when someone searches the name SEO Positive, how do we do that?

Link building, it is a very simple technique that works with websites and also social media profiles. If you or your company has a blog, throw a link in to your profile, for example you can mention the word Twitter, and link your Twitter profile to that. If you want to take the more extreme route, you can use an anchor text link with your business name. This is the best thing you can do to optimise your profiles. By making an effort of linking to your profiles in each of your blogs, even if they are guest posts, then your profiles will rank higher because of this.

Having your social media profiles rank higher is great for things like reputation management, because it makes your profiles more visible to potential customers which will not only help increase your following, but also help your customers get to know you and your company a little better.

Conclusion

Because your own company name is not a very competitive key term, so you should see results quite soon, and if you make a conscious effort to send links in the direction of your social media profiles, then your profiles will stay up there and not only help build your fan base or following, but help build and maintain your current reputation.

If you were to try and use Twitter to help link build for your site, you would be called insane because Twitter make all of their links no follow. What if there was a way that you could use you Twitters’ content, to create a website and link out from that website to your own site which is in need of inbound links.

Twylah is an ingenious idea that has been long awaited. The site pulls all of your content from Twitter and organises it into topics which is based on keywords in the mini blogs. Twylah also shows what topics are trending with each user. According to Twylah, my trending topics are: SEO, Google, Facebook, Brand, Social Media and Google +. That sounds fairly accurate to me.

Besides Twylahs’ clever trending feature, it has much higher potential. I myself guest blog quite frequently, and have made a constant effort to link build to my Twylah page to help increase the worth of that site in Googles’ eyes. My Twylah page has a PR of 1, however I have also been link building to SEO Positive’s Twylah page and they have a PR of 3! This must be due to where the links are coming from because the SEO Positive page has a few links going to the page where as my laustinseo Twylah page currently has none. This must be due to SEO Positives PR of 5.

So if your Twylah page does have a relatively high PR, then you can begin to use it. The first and most obvious would be to link to pages that need more attention in terms of search engine optimisation, this is what would naturally happen, but also you could begin to sell a link going from your Twylah page, to someone elses and it can become an outgoing link service, all from your Twitter feed.
Blogs have always been crucial for search engine optimisation; there are a few factors of your writing that need to be spot on. The reason why a blog is essential for SEO is because it generates fresh and usually relevant content, and depending on how often the blog is updated, the more or less helpful it will be.

Updating Your Blog

Adding new articles to your blog can be very difficult, the actual writing part is one of the easiest steps, and it’s actually the topic of the article which can be the hardest to come up with. This isn’t a bad thing, it is just a case of writers block and everyone gets it from time to time. One way I have found to help inspire topic ideas for articles is by signing up to Google alerts for topics that I write about. Sometimes even this does not help because there are periods of time where nothing new is happening in your industry but something will eventually turn up. It is through the times where nothing “new” is happening which will prove to be some of the most difficult for writing, but when this happens it is the perfect time to write how to’s and the infamous top 5 things not to do articles. They may seem a little bit repeated, but if you are writing for SEO reasons, then the topic should not be of a huge concern anyway.

Adding Keywords

Adding keywords is something a lot of bloggers can struggle with but the correct keywords tend to pop into the article naturally. If you key word stuff your article, it will have a negative effect due to the black hatted techniques. Also the quality of the article will be severely poor.

As long as the topic you are blogging about is related to your industry, you will find the keywords do flow naturally, if for some reason the keywords are not in your article. Just go over the article and find a section where you can add them. One way of doing this is by adding an example where you mention your keywords.

Linking to the Right Page

Once you have keywords in your article, you then need to link to the right pages. Try and link exact keywords to the page you are optimising for them terms, also if you are on Google plus or any other social network, like Twitter, you can link build using your blog for key phrases like a company name, or a key term you want your profile to show up for.

Conclusion

Writing can prove to be difficult, and when that writing is affecting you SEO efforts, the pressure begins to mount up, but by baring a few things in mind, the problem of writers block can be avoided and your writing will begin to benefit your optimising efforts.

Google announced yesterday that there have been some more changes in their annoying algorithm. A total of 10 changes have been made public but that does not necessarily mean there isn’t any more.

For the full list, visit their inside search blog for the full details. The most important update is most likely the freshness update. It was announced on the 3rd but has been added to this list, this somewhat emphasises how important the freshness factor is.

The freshness update is looking for the most recent content in a nutshell. Google believes that it is more likely for someone to be searching for information that is more up to date, instead of historical information. However some may be using Google to research past events, the majority use Google for recent updates. That is what the update is telling us anyway.

SEOh NO!

No need to panic in terms of SEO, we all know that Google loves content and it always will. This freshness update may have become somewhat of a surprise but this update can be used to an advantage. The majority of people do have a blog which naturally relates to their business, so if you are not already, just make sure your blog is regularly updated.

The big G has finally confirmed it; we have another Panda to deal with. The algorithm has been officially updated, estimated at 500 different updates, and according to Search Engine Land, we are in the age of 2.5.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that no specifics have been released. The type of website, pages or even content have been shared, all that was shared was Googles’ default statement: “We’re continuing to iterate on our Panda algorithm as part of our commitment to returning high-quality sites to Google users. This most recent update is one of the roughly 500 changes we make to our ranking algorithms each year.”

According to WebProNews, the update was rolled out on the 28th of September, but there are a handful of other sources that suggest the Panda was released on the 27th. If we take WebProNews’ statement, then the 2.5 update has had the longest gap we have seen since Aprils’ update.

Alike all of the previous updates, sites have seen a dramatic change. Now is the time for those that have fallen of the face of the earth to recover, and for those who have passed their Panda test, to sit back and enjoy the massive increase of traffic.

When businesses design an Internet marketing budget, search engine optimization (SEO), insofar as it increases rankings on search engine result pages (SERPs), is a common, if not mandatory, consideration. Marketers go to great lengths to select the appropriate keywords and densities for article marketing, and building robust sets of articles and back links featuring these keywords is a priority. An oft-overlooked way of increasing SEO, namely the development of a social media presence, may well become the most vital of techniques as social media continues to grow and become a major Internet service offering.

The Major Players

Google and Bing have both publicly confirmed that links shared through social media, particularly links with a high degree of activity in the form of comments, likes, and reshares, impact search engine optimization. Taking into account user +1′s through the Google+ network is at least partially responsible for some of the recent shakeup in search engine rankings associated with Google’s Panda update.

Search engine optimization has evolved to be a more holistic marketing effort. Utilizing all of the marketing means at your disposal means developing a robust social presence, strong article marketing efforts, keywords and links shared widely across the Internet, and companion blogs, developed by the marketer, which share additional blog posts and back links to the main site. It’s no longer enough to simply stuff keywords to a particular density and hope the search engines pick up the pages. You may have even seen a steady decrease of your search engine result placement for existing pages developed and marketing in this fashion.

How to Win the Game

Enhancing your existing SEO by sharing your articles on a social site and encouraging users to comment and like the pages does not take an extremely strong existing social presence to be effective. To start with no additional time commitment, you can share links with the fans you already have by automatically syndicating your blog’s RSS feed to your Facebook page. A more effective way to address the social aspect of the network is to write an additional 20-30 words on any article that you are posting to your blog, particularly a thought-provoking summary that invites questions, and using this as a lead-in to your article link on Facebook or Google+.

Unfortunately, if your article marketing efforts are primarily composed of low-quality, spun article content, you won’t see the kind of social activity necessary to achieve solid search engine optimization from your social networks. This is why it’s becoming crucial to develop quality content, rather than barely-readable computer-generated content. Link-bait articles, or articles designed to be widely shared, benefit your search engine optimization efforts more than any other article marketing due to the benefits of social sharing.

Remember these two key features of social networks. First, they often pull the meta description when your link is shared, so really play up your meta tags. Second, you need to make sure that you are using a URL shortener that does a 301 redirect to your page. A good example is bit.ly.

It’s a known fact that Google and Bing have been using activity on Facebook since at least 2010 to influence search engine rankings. Failing to take advantage of social media, particularly now, as the medium is emerging and it is easy to develop a strong following, is a common oversight by SEO experts, some of which are stuck in traditional article marketing strategies, others who do not realize the additional SEO benefit that social sharing creates. Avoid these pitfalls by developing a social presence early on all of the popular social networking sites, including Facebook, Google+, and Twitter.

Analysing the search results before you jump in is something that can save you months of pain down the road. I found this out with my first seo project where I decided to rank for the phrase “web hosting” using my new adsense supported review blog. I had no concept of competition or the fact that some niches can take years to conquer. So is it really possible to work out how much competition there is in a market before getting involved? Well its not an exact science but it is possible to get an idea whether you should dive in or not.

Putting a number on the links

Numbers are always a nice place to start since it gives you a solid target to beat. Even though the type of links your competition has is very important (as I will talk about next) its still vital to count volume. So the mistake many webmasters make is just looking at the overall backlink count using the link: command in yahoo or google. Google only shows a fraction of the links and yahoo counts more than on link from the same domain, for instance if you get a site wide link on a blog with a 1000 pages yahoo would say that’s a 1000 links. We know that a 1000 links from one site is not the same as 1 link from a 1000 sites so we cant use this data. Instead we want to know the number of unique domains (sites) that are linking to our competitor, a good place to do this is open site explorer by seomoz, you just plugin your main competitor and it throws you back a nice number under “linking root domains”. I believe that the total number of linking domains is a key factor so if this number looks unrealistic you may need to think again.

Quality or questionable links?

Its important to get an idea of what type of links your competition has because quality seems to become a bigger issue with every google update. What I look for is an overview of the type of links they are getting and if they are all coming from the same neighbourhood, for example are they all from footer links in WordPress themes? Or maybe most of their links are from forum profiles? These kind of links are easy to spot in either open site explorer or even yahoo and to me is a real sign of a short term link building strategy, but more importantly I know its a profile I can beat with just a few quality links. As mentioned what your really trying to do is get an overview and not trying to analyse every link in detail. You could get lost for days trying to give a value to each link, plus remember that only Google knows the true weight of any backlink.

Authority domain or specialist site?

I like to put every site I find in the results into one of two categories. The first is a big authority domain with maybe a single page on the subject like eBay or Amazon and the other is a smaller niche site which may have hundreds of pages dedicated to the niche. So many marketers see the bigger authority sites and give up straight away but I’m usually thinking the opposite. When your dealing with a niche keyword often these authority sites will have only a single content thin page on the subject, most of the data may even be copied from the manufacturers specs. When I see this I know its one area I can definitely improve on as I can easily create 40 - 50 quality pages on the subject, it just takes time. You see many of these bigger sites often appear as a default option, they may have little content but google knows they wont be spam. Its important to look at the links to these pages too (often very low) but in my experience if your prepared to create some quality content with a few good links you instantly become a more attractive prospect to google than these default listings.

Connecting all the pieces

At the end of all this analysis you have to put all of the pieces of the puzzle together to give a simple yes or no, do I go for the keyword or not? Its important to remember that throughout the whole process you are only looking for an overview of the main factors. Its easy to get lost inspecting every link and piece or content your competition has but unless you work for Google that’s pointless. Also bear in mind that difficultly is a very subjective thing, as some marketers can rank for things you cant and vice-versa. Ultimately its a personal decision, just make sure you can swim before you jump in!

Regardless of what kind of entertainment or media is involved - be it movies, music, television, books or newspapers - fresh stories will always be vital in helping it grow and succeed. So, if you have a website, then you have to make sure that you focus on your search engine ranking. After all, if your website doesn’t have original and new content, then it won’t be able to survive in today’s competitive online world.

Have you ever thought about how search engines find content that respond to people’s search requests? Well, these search engines send out robots that crawl the World Wide Web 24/7 searching it for fresh and new content. Since one of their main goals is to provide great search results, they will usually respond to updated and fresh content.

Due to this need for updated and new material, you will usually see blogs with properly configured SEO content rank the highest on web rankings. And, since a lot of websites use proper blog hosts, they are already naturally configured in ways that search engines will approve of. Of course, their updated comments, feedbacks and article posts will help, as well. In a nutshell, websites without updated content or visitor activities will quickly dry out and become outdated.

Aside from freshness, another vital factor to take into consideration would be your content’s overall SEO performance. The best SEO websites usually use the right kinds of keywords in their content. So, if you wish to get high rankings on search engines with a certain keyword, you need to ensure that you use that phrase in your content several times, so that the keyword will be associated with your site.

Now, this doesn’t mean that you can overuse it, though. if you overuse a keyword on purpose, then search engines will automatically penalize your website and give it a lower score on the search rankings. In other words, taking too much advantage of keywords won’t get you anywhere.

Lastly, it would be vital to provide nothing but unique content on your website. If there are several duplicates of your content on the World Wide Web, then search engines will notice this and give you lower ranking values than you would have gotten from unique content.

So, in general, there are two reasons why you need to have great content. First of all, you have to make sure your visitors stay interested in your content and come back for more.

And, second of all, you want search engines to take notice of your website and give it higher search engine rankings. Remember, though: there is a difference between making your visitors happy and making search engines happy, so try your best to make both of them happy by providing unique content at all times.
