Google released one of the most interactive doodles yet, this doodle was to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Stanislaw Lem and his first ever book publication. Lem was a polish Sci Fi author and was best known for his novel called Solaris which was published in 1961. This novel was later made into a film which starred George Clooney in 2002.

Unlike previous doodles, when clicking on the animation, Google users are not transported onto another page, the animation continues and the little character walks along the screen to a giant robot with a somewhat untrustworthy calculator. Once this mini game is completed, the character walks up to another challenge in which you have to match up the lines in an oscilloscope, and your final task is to shoot a robot out of a cannon to hit a satellite dish. As you complete each task, you collect a part to build some form of robot. Towards the end, the head is added to the giant robot and explodes, sending you to the results page for Stanislaw Lem.

For those that don’t know much about Lem, this doodle can seem somewhat confusing but fun at the same time. Either way this doodle is very elaborate and must have took some work on Google’s end, which makes a change from their usual algorithm updates that constantly evolve SEO. This doodle is without a doubt, a great tribute to an age old Sci Fi novel and author.

SEOs world wide would have been redirected to the dreaded page of the “site explorer update” In a nutshell, this service is no more and we are going to have to find another place to locate a reliable source of backlinks.

We were all told that Yahoo site explorer was going to be closed down at some point, but it has come to a shock to all SEO’s of the world. Such a massively used and reliable tool is now no more.

Yahoo have said that Yahoo search has been merged with Bings’ Webmaster tools. For many toolbars such as SEO Book, this has caused a massive problem. Beforehand, we had the ease of viewing the amount of backlinks a page had, without even having to open up another browser.

What Is Next?

It is fair to say that Yahoo! Are finished and this site explorer integration to Bing was the last step. SEO’s will have to find a new source of information to base their research on, this will prove to be a difficult task, especially because Yahoo was free and provided excellent results. This could lead to many SEO companies having to go down the route of purchasing software which was once not needed but could now be an essential factor of any SEO business.

The integration into Bings’ Webmaster tools could prove to be a good thing, however this may not completely take off because it may be unable to include into a toolbar like it was for Yahoo site explorer. Fingers cross that there is something that can be done on the situation, because SEO’s will be feeling the burn of an essential tool being snatched away.

Google Plus has finally released the ability to create pages! The long awaited moment is finally here and now Google Plus can be used for businesses.

G+ released a video, as they religiously do whenever something is released, showing how having your business on Google Plus can be beneficial. It explains that it enables you to connect more with your customers, or even potential customers and build a relationship with them, creating one of the best possible customers to brand relationships available.

Tools like Hangouts and Circles can still be used even for the pages, which means that businesses can actually hang out with their customers. This is a great opportunity and has an endless list of possibilities, for example a question and answer session online, or an instructional video where customers can ask for help there and then.

This hangout feature creates convenience with customer service and provides a platform where it can be as close to real life as possible.

In the next few days I will be optimizing a Google Plus page for SEO Positive and oversee how my efforts have increased positions and so on. From what I have seen so far, Google Pages are put together very well in the sense that they are extremely similar to the Google + profiles, however they can represent a business and in my opinion they are better than Facebook pages because of the possibilities that are available currently.

Yesterday, many of us awoke to the dreadful news of Steve Jobs and that he passed away. But I think we should be focusing on what he achieved in his life and how much he affected others with his astonishing achievements.

1955 -

Steve Jobs was born, February, 24th

1972 -

Steve joined Reed College, Portland, he dropped out after a semester.

1974 -

Stephen was employed by Atari, who created the classic arcade game, SPACE INVADORS! He also attended meetings with the Homebrew Computer Club accompanied by an old friend from high school, Steve Wozniak.

1975 -

Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak continued attending their Homebrew Computer Club gatherings.

1976 -

The first Apple computer was created on April fool’s day, which was a few days after Steve Jobs and Wozniak created a circuit board in their garage, located in Silicon Valley. Ron Wayne, who was the third co-founder Apple, left the company, after 2 weeks, the first ever Apple computer then went on the shelves for $666.66 ready for the summer.

1977 -

A second model of the Apple computer was revealed; the first personal computer to have colour graphics, Apples’ income reached $1 billion.

1978 -

Steve Jobs become the father to his daughter, Lisa; the mother was Chrissan Brennan who was Stephens’ girlfriend.

1979 -

Steve went to PARC (Xerox Pala Alto Research Centre) and was motivated by a Personal Computer that had a user interface which was graphical.

1980 -

Apple sells its products to the public; they earned around $110 million in what could be one of the biggest public offerings to this day.

1982 -

Yearly income totals at $1 billion.

1983 -

The Lisa PC was available to buy. Steve employed John Sculley as CEO of Apple

1984 -

The Macintosh advert was aired at half time of the Super Bowl, the Macintosh was then available in stores.

1985 -

Steve and Sculley argued, causing Steve leave Apple. Wozniak resigned Apple later in that year.

1986 -

Steve Jobs began his corporation called Next Inc., which was a new computer manufacturing and development company, creating PC’s for universities. He also purchased Pixar off of George Lucas, who we all know today as the creator of Star Wars.

1989 -

The first computer from Next Inc., was put on the shelves for a total of $6, 500

1991 -

Apple announce a new partnership with IBM to create new PC software and microprocessors; Apple releases portable Macs named PowerBook’s which were developed into the Macbooks that we know today.

1993 -

Apple unveils the Newton, a pen controlled, hand held computer. Apple lost $188 million in the quarter of that year. John Sculley was replaced with Michael Spindler who was promoted to the CEO of Apple. Sculley resigned as chairman. Steve Jobs wants to focus to be on developing software, as opposed to computers.

1994 -

Apple releases the Power Macintosh, which was created around the PowerPC chip that IBM and Motorola helped to develop, Apple then licensed its OS, which allowed, competing companies to clone Mac software.

1995 -

The first Mac clones were sold. Pixars’ animated film, Toy Story, was released in theatres which caused Pixar to go to Wall Street with a 140 Million IPO.

1996 -

Apple stated they wanted to buy Next Inc. for a total of $430 million, to become the owners of the OS Steve and his team had created. Steve then became the official advisor of Apple. Spindler was replaced with Gil Amelio as CEO of Apple.

1997 -

Steve was then promoted to the short-term CEO of Apple after Amelio was let go; he created an ingenious marketing opportunity by calling to himself the iCEO of Apple. Steve then put a stop to the Mac copy cats.

1998 -

Apple starts to make a profit, once again. Apple releases a candy coloured iMac which greatly changed the personal computing trade. The handheld Newton was also take off of the shelves.

2000 -

Steve Jobs became the permanent iCEO of Apple

2001 -

The first ever iPod was sold. Macs with a new operating system (OS X) were also released as well as the music software known as iTunes.

2003 -

Apple launches the iTunes online music store, with an estimated 200,000 songs that were priced at 99 cents each. 1 million songs had been purchased in the first week of iTunes being released.

2004 -

Jobs undertook surgical treatment for a curable case of pancreatic cancer; Apple released this information after his treatment.

2005 -

Apple produces different forms of the iPod, containing the iPod Nano, also an iPod that can play videos. Macs that were to be released at a later date were proclaimed to use Intel chips.

2006 -

Disney bought Pixar animations from Steve Jobs for a price of $7.4 billion, making him Disney’s largest shareholder.

2007 -

Apple unveils their first smart phone, the iPhone; customers camped overnight to be the first to get their very own.

2008 -

Steve Jobs seems to be ill because of his extreme loss of weight. In Apples’ event, September, he said that the rumours of his death are overstated.

2009 -

Steve clarifies that his weight loss is down to a hormone imbalance and he will be continuing to run Apple. Just a few days after this, he announced he will be on medical leave; he had a liver transplant and came back to the company in June.

2010 -

Apple sold 15 million iPads within only 9 months of its’ release.

January 17th 2011 -

Steve Jobs declared another medical leave to his employees by memo. Cook then took Steves’ position and ran Apples’ projects however; Jobs kept his title as CEO and was still a big part of important decisions.

August 24th 2011 -

Steve Jobs resigned from Apple, Cook then took the position of CEO and Jobs is titled as the chairman of Apple.

October 5th 2011 -

Steve Jobs died at 56 years old. Apple announced his death without giving a COD.

We have lost a fantastic person, even if we did not have the privilege to meet Steve ourselves, we cannot deny that he has changed every humans life, whether they know it or not. By pushing the human race to develop and realise that the limits are the ones we set. RIP Steve Jobs.

Blame the Social Media

August 10th, 2011

Twitter, Facebook and BlackBerry Messenger have taken a lot of blame for the riots in London and also in Manchester. The question is who is to blame, these hugely popular communication sites, or the users themselves? It is typical human behaviour to just shift the blame on to someone else. This has been applied to social networks and I believe that it is unfair to make that judgement without deeply looking into the matter.

The Riots

The Riots that are taking place in the UK this August are a terrible thing. What started out as a peaceful protest for the death of Mark Duggan has spiralled deeply out of control. What is happening is not a protest, it is just opportunistic violence. Now it is safe to say that the majority of these rioters have mobile devices and are well connected to their friends through not only Facebook, Twitter and BBM, but also through simple text messaging services and, of course, phone calls. This high level of connectivity means that rioters can organise themselves to avoid the police thus continuing their rioting activities.

Now as we all know, there are certain levels of privacy within these networks. BBM in fact is one of the most private forms of communication as BBM is encrypted due to its original uses of business communication. In the past few years BlackBerrys have become very popular with the younger population and BBM is one of the major ways in which teenagers communicate with each other, hence why a lot of conversations are pinged back and forth. In this case, BBM’s extensive privacy is a huge disadvantage for police as they cannot monetiz what is happening and have no way of preparing themselves. They’re literally in the dark on this one. Unless they can come to an agreement with the service provider to open up the encrypted messages to assist their investigations)

Not All Doom and Gloom

In the defence of these services, networks like Twitter have contributed to astonishing events, and have even saved lives. Donnie Wahlberg found a kidney for one of his fans via Twitter - without Twitter a life would have been lost. In addition to that, James Karl Buck was imprisoned in Egypt for unjust reasons; he used Twitter to inform his family, friends and authorities. He was then released from Egypt and regained his freedom. There are more examples available on the CBSNews website.

Taking these amazing acts into consideration, Twitter and other social networks have done astonishing things. Although the real question is, is it the social networking site itself, or the users? There is no yes or no answer to this one I am afraid. If there were no Twitter for example, the fan searching for a liver would have died. Alternatively, if Donnie didn’t post anything regarding the fan’s liver, then he would have died also. It is clear that none of these miracles would be possible without both social media, and users working together to pull off these extraordinary acts.

Not only in miracles but Twitter has been used to start the riot clean up hash tag, gathering the members of the community up to clean their city up and begin to recover from the riot. This also takes the strain off the local emergency services, who are struggling to cope with controlling the extreme behaviour, never mind the aftermath. There is actually more information regarding cleaning up the riots than partaking in them on Twitter and I think that definitely needs to be taken into account. In addition these sites are improving morale between the communities, which is a positive way to use social media technology. Social media can act as a platform for people who want to cause problems but are also an easy way for opponents to the violence to get in touch and start making a difference

How society is developing

Society is clearly fusing itself with the internet in such a way that the majority of some ones questions can be answered online. It has been a gradual process but the internet and people are becoming an object. As technology develops, so does our involvement with it. This will result in better access to all kinds of information, but technology will not be limited in the sense of how much it can develop. The sky is the limit and we can make anything possible.

Back to the Riots

So having explained how our society is developing with technology, it is understandable how these acts of anarchy have happened. As previously stated, it is not just the acts of the users but the networking sites have had an unconscious part in it too. Yes it is fair to say that these means of communication make it virtually impossible for the police to keep up, on the other hand social media sites have been more than happy in the past to provide needed information to stop crimes in the past, so I imagine the police will receive support in this case also.

Conclusion

It needs to be remembered that these social media sites are only a means of communication, they do not interact with the users any more than an update here or there, or an account ban for example, these sites are just connections between masses of users. It is not just to blame the service provider - blame those who are misusing the service.

As you many know, there are quite a few web browsers currently available, but one of the newest and most up and coming web browsers has seemed to somewhat take over. Google Chrome has become the second most popular browser in the UK (Internet Explorer is still up there in first place) and this could be due to a multitude of factors.

Browsers tend to come and go, but here is a list of those who seem to be staying put throughout this year: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera and Safari. All of these browsers have been around for a few years and have been upgraded quite a few times by their developers.

Google Chrome

Let’s take a look at Google Chrome. Chrome was first released September 2008, developed and released by Google Inc. Now in comparison to other browsers, Chrome is, metaphorically speaking, just a child. Children however, tend to have a lot of energy, and also tend to be more on trend than their elders. This reflects on Google’s creation perfectly. Chrome has the quickest page load speeds and in version 13, instant page loads are possible. A page that loads instantly is, in my opinion, astonishing, it really just goes to show how far technology has come along, remember when pages loaded from top to bottom at a snail’s pace? One row at a time, well Chrome is showing that in can load these pages instantly, in comparison there has been a lot of progress ma

de. In relation to it being trendy, Chrome has a very sleek interface and an expanding amount of themes, all easily changeable by the user depending on personal preference.

Mozilla Firefox

November 2004 was when Firefox first hit the scene, possibly the best time for any browser to join, as there were only a few real competitors in that time. Some of its features include tabbed browsing, spell checking, incremental find, live bookmarking, a download manager, private browsing, location-aware browsing. However a lot of these features are quite typical in browsers now. The only thing, I think, that makes Firefox stand out is its tools. Seen as Firefox has been around for quite a while, it’s had more time to develop tools and so on, so it is understandable why it has so many. A massive SEO tool would be SEOBook, this is an example of a tool that is exclusive to Firefox, this is one contributing factor that could lead to users.

Internet Explorer

Explorer debuted August, 1995. IE is the oldest web browser still running today. It is a typical web browser and has the same amount of features as any other. However Microsoft does own this browser and naturally it is set as any PC’s default browser. Additionally, Internet Explorer has a very simplistic feel. I don’t mean this in a negative way - it just seems as if what isn’t necessary isn’t there.

Opera

The Opera browser is also one of the oldest browsers (not as old as IE though!), released in December, 1996. Again like most web browsers it has the tabbed browsing, and other popular features, like private browsing, a bookmarking bar and so on. However something unique about Opera is its speed dial feature. For those who are not familiar with this tool, users have the ability to add up to around 25 links, this makes access to your favourite and most used sites easier than some other browsers, and this speed dial feature opens every time the browser or a new tab is opened up. Chrome has a similar feature however it gives off a completely different feel and experience, due to the layout and general processes that are used.

Safari

Apple runs the Safari browser, and to no surprise it follows the same layout and schemes as their other software. This platform is very similar to Internet Explorer, the only real variance between them being the obvious differences between a mac and a PC - just a few minor tweaks here and there and also, of course, visual differences.

The SEO point of view

Being a part of SEO Positive obviously makes it easy to gauge an SEO opinion on browsers. I’ve found that all of my colleagues are using Firefox. In all fairness, Firefox is not particularly slow, and it does have tools that are essential to the work of SEO consultants. SEOBook is the main tool that my colleagues use, the reason for this is that it shows the vital statistics of each site visited, ie page ranking, different types of page links to the site and the page you are on, as well as other handy elements such as Alexa ranking. All of these things are vital for those who use SEO.

The Social Media Marketing point of view

I personally deal with Social Media Marketing quite intensely. Aspects of SEO and other variants of SEM do come in to my field from time to time, but my main focus would be on Social Media integration. Now the time that a webpage takes to load is very important for me; I use the internet about 75% of the time I work which is why I need a fast browser. If a page is loading slowly, then it cuts into my productivity. Also I use multiple sites for bookmarking, networking and blogging. So a toolbar that clearly displays each website is vital and will help me navigate through the sites that I am active on. For these reasons I have chosen to use Chrome. It matches what I require and I have never experienced a problem.

The public’s opinion

I know that there are a lot of polls and so on regarding this topic. I have conducted my own using Twitter, Warrior Forum and Linkedin. What I have found is that the majority are using Chrome and the rest are on Firefox. Chrome is being used mainly for things like the speed of the browser and its instant Google Search option, along with the bookmarks toolbar and the general appeal of the layout. Firefox users tend to be drawn in by the multitude of tools, the rest of the features are quite typical but this factor will sway them. Also I have found a lot of people don’t like to use Google due to their algorithms, it seems people have developed paranoia about Google “watching” them. I disagree with this; it is fair to say algorithms are used to show targeted ads for the user. However it is a program that pretty much picks up keywords, it is not a case of an actual person sitting and reading your mail or reviewing your history. Google doesn’t scare me in that sense.

Global Usage

Statcounter’s statistics, show that Internet explorer is the most used browser, worldwide, followed by Firefox then Chrome, then Safari and lastly Opera. However the only browser that is receiving an increase in users is Chrome. Firefox and Internet Explorer are decreasing significantly, whereas Opera and Safari have had the same amount of users for at least 3 years.

Conclusion

It seems that, for now, Internet Explorer and Firefox remain at the top of the tree. However, in the foreseeable future, I imagine users of all current browsers converting to Chrome. Meaning that the amount of people using Chrome will increase, and as a result of this all competing browsers will suffer a decrease.

The website design industry is currently buzzing about the introduction or entry of the new versions of HTML and CSS which is deemed to be the next standard in website design and development. This topic is also shaking up the search engine optimisation industry, as we all know some elements in SEO is dependent on the different HTML tags that is being utilised, a good HTML structured website could make such website easily crawlable by the website crawlers. In the design aspect the new Cascading style sheet version has added more features that would make designing a website a lot more flexible, some barriers in design structure before may now be possible with the advent of the new features of CSS. Yep HTML 5 and CSS 3 are coming and it is expected to bring in a new era in website design and development.

The following is a preview on what the new Cascading Style Sheets can do:

1. Expanding the Capabilities of Selectors - selectors is one of the features of CSS that made is very versatile and easy to use, for CSS3 this feature has been expanded now it has the ability to target very specific elements based on an attribute value, unlike before that it is only targeting elements and not specific attribute values.

2. Ability to design rounded corners – finally rounded corners can now be coded in, unlike before where rounded corners of boxes are dependent on the type of images used.

3. Font use flexibility – prior to CSS3 there was a huge limitation in the use of font styles, it is limited as far as what types of font a browser can recognise, but thanks to CSS3 that limitation is now removed, CSS3 already allows the use of OpenType or TrueType fonts, however it would be the website designers’ or website company’s duty to arrange for the licensing of any commercial fonts that will be utilised within the website.

There are more new features in CSS3 which we promise to bring you when they unfold as of now many website designers, website design companies and even SEO experts who are getting worked up and excited with the coming of these new features.

Lots of SEO related forums, blogs and community boards are going crazy about the latest Google pagerank update. Why so crazy? you might ask, well when Google usually does a pagerank update, every webmaster who knows what pagerank is checks to see if their website has increased since the last update (historically every three months or so). However Google hasn’t done a toolbar pagerank update since April 2010, and webmasters, and SEO specialists all over were wondering if this was the end of Google’s updates? Well good news all you pagerank lovers, it looks like its still here as over the last 5 days sites all over the web have been seeing increases & decreases in their toolbar PR.

To find out what pagerank your website is simply to go one of the many FREE pagerank checker tools throughout the internet and simply just type your domain name in to see what pagerank your web page has been given by the search giant. However, remember this…. Pagerank does not effect your rankings! Just because you ahve a good pagerank, this doesn’t mean that your website is going to be listed high on the search engines. Likewise, if you have a low pagerank, you can still be number 1 on Google and the other major search engines.

Just last year many Search Engine Optimisation Companies anticipated and lauded the release of Google’s new search engine algorithm which was brought about by the launching of the search engine giant’s new product, the Google instant and the Google instant preview. With the introduction of these two new features for the Google search engines the search engine giant’s ranking factor was also modified in ways that would require SEO Consultants as well as SEO Experts to make some changes in their website and SEO campaign approach in order to accommodate Google’s new ranking factors. Change is constant in the world of the search engine giant because of the fact that the company is constantly improving their products and the delivery of their services to their clients or loyal users. It is because of this passion to improve that Google has again rolled out another new feature, this time involving a Google product the Google Adwords. It is a known fact that Google Adwords has become one of Internet Advertiser’s tool for generating revenue for their respective website and it is also a known fact that Google has not yet provided for any avenue for Adwords user to manage the use of negative keywords.

In the recent update that was released by Google in their Google Adwords service however, the search engine company has released their new Adwords interface in order to accommodate or allow internet marketer to be able to utilise a single negative keyword list across multiple campaigns. This will make it easier for internet marketers to incorporate negative keywords to multiple campaigns.

Another change that was implemented by Google is the modification of the Google Search ads display. It can be observed that the search ads of Google had some changes like that of a bigger space was allocated for a headline ad in order to accommodate the first line of description, ads being displayed in rows of three, and two description lines being merged into one for better presentation were among the said changes.

Companies considered as major players in the field of search engines are constantly battling each other and supremacy is determined by the number of internet users share that a certain search engine company have gathered. For so many years now Google remained to be a dominant force in the field of search engine having remained to be the search engine to have gathered the largest share of internet users. The pioneer Yahoo company remains to be in second place while Microsoft is coming in a strong third. With the constant stay of Google at number one its competitors have begun to take necessary steps into developing and marketing their product or search engine. Microsoft changed its platform of search engine from MSN live to Bing and have spent millions of dollars prior to its launch, even with such effort however, Microsoft still remained to be at third place and Google still remain to be at the top spot. It is because of this that Microsoft and Yahoo have entered into an agreement and merged their resources in order to battle the search engine giant in terms of internet users.

These efforts that were conducted by Microsoft and Yahoo may be paying off as the recent survey results for the month of June done by comScore the search engine from Yahoo and Microsoft both gained in number of internet users. Yahoo increased its internet users’ share from 18.3 percent to 18.9 percent while Microsoft’s Bing rose from 12.1 percent to 12.7 percent. With this increase in internet users’ share it is expected the Google have lost some ground, from 63.7 percent from the previous month to June’s 62.6 percent. With this gradual change in the percentage of internet users share SEO companies and SEO consultants must also then start considering the fact that their SEO campaign should not only focus on Google but also on other search engines.
