For bloggers using social media networks know as Google Plus, there is a way, it has been available for a few months, to claim an article as your own. Having authorship of an article has a few benefits.

What’s The Point?

The first and most obvious when seen is that your Google+ photo appears in search results. This is more of a vanity feature but it is a cool one and makes blogging a real form of writing. Very similar to a hard copy book In the way that the author is given a lot of credit for it.

Another benefit is that it makes all content written by an author easier to find, when you find the author icon on a search result then there will be a link for more by that author. So this makes finding content by a specific blogger easier than ever.

One of the biggest points is that it puts your name on your own articles, which means that the problem of having articles stolen is finally combatted. This problem will no doubt continue, but if someone is stealing an article, it is easy to prove who the content really belongs to, which will make it embarrassing to be proved wrong and that you are stealing articles.

How To Do It

Matt Cutts has made a few videos explaining how to add authorship to content and this can be found easily on Youtube. The simpler way is to add HTML code. I will show an example, for your reference “URL” would be the URL of your Google Plus profile. +You. The text within the link can say whatever you want but its best to say +”your name” but it really isn’t essential.

According to the instructional videos, the next step is to share the article on your Google + profile, this seems simple enough and if you are an active Google + user you are most likely already doing this.

Conclusion

The benefits of having authorship are definitely worth the effort of inserting a small chunk of HTML code, and if you’re a heavy Google + user then the only thing you will have to do differently is add the HTML code which can be copied and pasted.

Hoping that you have all had a great time over the holiday season and wishing you all the best in this New Year. Many things are happening this year such as the 2012 Olympics which are coming to London this year, not to mention Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee this February.

For SEO companies and enthusiasts, we could be looking at a huge or minor change in the industry this year. There where algorithm changes last year with the integration of the social network Google Plus. So what has Google got in store for us this year? Without a doubt there will be more changes to the algorithm but maybe a few more features will be released and majorly impact search as we know it.

Another possibility is that Google Plus becomes a hugely dominant social network and leaves Facebook in the dust, which will give Google the full Monopoly board so to speak. All of this is yet to come in 2012 and there will be things that no one could have predicted as with every year.

Predictions based on last year can be made by anyone and really they are simply preparations in case something like an algorithm change happens which will cause a few sites to drop dramatically in the SERP’s. All there is to do is to wait and see until Google or any other SEO, Social Media, PPC or even Web Design related news is released.

Blogging is either for SEO or for the original reason of a blog which is writing for an audience. Regardless to what your reasons for writing are, it is important to come up with good quality, meaningful and useful content regularly. The real difficulty is maintaining a constant flow of content.

Brainstorming is one of the oldest methods around, get a few of your friends or colleagues together and have a discussion about ideas for articles. It is much easier to come up with these kinds of ideas in a group. If your group is having trouble coming up with ideas, have a look at other blogs that are similar, or maybe try Google searching a few of your keywords into the news sections.

Once you have a few topics in mind and written down, try and think of different angles that you could take for that article. For example PPC and why it is…: better for small business, a quicker result compared to SEO and so on. The more angles you can take on one topic, the more blog posts you can get, it must be said that extra care must be taken as you need to mix up the topics; it looks a bit repeated if you keep the same topic and take a different angle straight after the last article.

Conclusion

Having a brainstorm with colleagues is a great way to come up with ideas, not just for blogging but generally. This method is a good method to generate topics in bulk, which means that when you come to writing your next article, you have not got spend half an hour or so thinking of a topic as you have a huge list already.

Blogs have always been crucial for search engine optimisation; there are a few factors of your writing that need to be spot on. The reason why a blog is essential for SEO is because it generates fresh and usually relevant content, and depending on how often the blog is updated, the more or less helpful it will be.

Updating Your Blog

Adding new articles to your blog can be very difficult, the actual writing part is one of the easiest steps, and it’s actually the topic of the article which can be the hardest to come up with. This isn’t a bad thing, it is just a case of writers block and everyone gets it from time to time. One way I have found to help inspire topic ideas for articles is by signing up to Google alerts for topics that I write about. Sometimes even this does not help because there are periods of time where nothing new is happening in your industry but something will eventually turn up. It is through the times where nothing “new” is happening which will prove to be some of the most difficult for writing, but when this happens it is the perfect time to write how to’s and the infamous top 5 things not to do articles. They may seem a little bit repeated, but if you are writing for SEO reasons, then the topic should not be of a huge concern anyway.

Adding Keywords

Adding keywords is something a lot of bloggers can struggle with but the correct keywords tend to pop into the article naturally. If you key word stuff your article, it will have a negative effect due to the black hatted techniques. Also the quality of the article will be severely poor.

As long as the topic you are blogging about is related to your industry, you will find the keywords do flow naturally, if for some reason the keywords are not in your article. Just go over the article and find a section where you can add them. One way of doing this is by adding an example where you mention your keywords.

Linking to the Right Page

Once you have keywords in your article, you then need to link to the right pages. Try and link exact keywords to the page you are optimising for them terms, also if you are on Google plus or any other social network, like Twitter, you can link build using your blog for key phrases like a company name, or a key term you want your profile to show up for.

Conclusion

Writing can prove to be difficult, and when that writing is affecting you SEO efforts, the pressure begins to mount up, but by baring a few things in mind, the problem of writers block can be avoided and your writing will begin to benefit your optimising efforts.

Five Top Tips for Guest Blogging

September 30th, 2011

Guest blogging is the link building technique everyone’s talking about. Thanks to the Google Panda update, the undeniably spammy ‘article marketing’ has taken a backseat and right now, it’s content that’s king.

If you’re looking to utilise guest blogging as a link building tool, here are five top tips to bear in mind.

Think quality

While this might seem obvious, there are hoards of writers with less than perfect English skills spitting out articles at every opportunity. If this is you, take a minute to think if writing your own content is likely to yield the best results. The truth is good quality blogs will only take content that matches or exceeds their own standards. If your writing is poor, only poor blogs will publish it. While practice makes perfect and over time, you should see your writing skills improve, it might be beneficial to simply employ an online marketing company or SEO agency to do the work for you.

Be original

Okay I know this is easier said than done, but in general, the more unique your content, the higher quality blogs it will attract. The best blogs don’t want recycled articles that every man and his dog’s blog are sporting. This doesn’t mean you have to come up with something completely new, original or untouched – you just need to look at things from a different angle. Read, read and read some more. Not only will your own writing skills improve, but you should also gain lots of inspiration. If you read something that you don’t quite agree with, why not write on the same topic from your own perspective? Again, if you’re struggling to come up with unique and engaging content, seek professional assistance from an online marketing company or SEO agency. There’s no shame in seeking help; you’re simply doing what’s best for your business.

Listen to what the bloggers want

If a blogger has guidelines, read them. If it’s obvious you haven’t bothered, or have but simply chosen to ignore them, it’s highly likely the blogger will reject your article. Not because it’s bad, but simply because you’ve demonstrated a lack of respect by ignoring their requests. In fact, take the time to read the blog in question. Bloggers love to receive complements on their work, and they’ll be much more receptive to writers who demonstrate a common interest than those who care for nothing more than a free link.

Give the blogger a reason to listen to you

The best blogs are run by busy people and if you want them to sit up and pay attention to your pitch; give them a reason to. Tell them you work for an established online marketing company and regularly write SEO related material. Or explain your love of fashion or experience working in the restaurant industry. Basically, whichever niche you’re pitching in; think how you relate to that industry and demonstrate why you’re the person to write on it.

Format properly

Bloggers like content that’s easy to read, since if a visitor to their blog is faced with large blocks of text they are unlikely to read it and may well leave the blog altogether. Take this post as an example of good formatting. The article is split into sections and the header to each section is clearly marked in bold. In addition, none of the paragraphs are too long. In fact, studies have shown that when reading material on the internet, paragraphs of no more than three lines are optimal.

If you are looking at ways to boost the popularity of your website then hiring the services of a SEO expert is a fantastic idea. If you do not optimise your site the chances of you reaching the first page in the search engines are minimal. It takes a lot of time and effort as well as insider knowhow and expertise to achieve a high ranking, and that is what SEO provider will supply you with. Until then here is a little bit of advice that can get you started off on the right foot.

A Blog is A Gentle Giant in the World of SEO

One of the best ways to optimise your website is to create a blog. I started out with a site that merely had a few pages about my services and then the products I was selling. I found it difficult to keep the website lively and the amount of URLs I created for the site was minimal. That meant that there was only so many pages I could submit to the social bookmarking sites which are excellent off-site SEO tools.

The other problem I found was that my social networking followers were quickly fed up of my posts linking them directly to my products. Fans and followers do not want to be sold to all the time. Instead they like a little conversation and some information. It made obvious sense to add a blog to my website and I feel it has been a very positive move for my business.

Some of the Advantages of Adding a Blog for SEO Purposes

Multiple URL creation. You can add to a blog as often as you like and each new post creates a brand new URL, or link, directly into your website. These can then be used in off-site SEO by your SEO provider.

URLs can only be added to social bookmarking sites once, and you are not allowed to submit URLs that lead to goods being sold on almost all of the bookmarking sites. This can leave minimal links that can be added to these useful websites. By creating a new URL at least once a week you can keep adding the links and sharing them with millions of users.

A blog is a good way of adding links on your own website too. Within each post it is perfectly acceptable to include deeper links into your own website to help encourage readers to delve a little deeper into your products or services.

A blog is a great way of encouraging customer responses and conversations. Some people like to speak directly to the people behind the company and a blog is the perfect way to allow them to make easy contact without having to call up your offices. Combine this with the customer service you can provide through social networking and your customers should be feeling pretty satisfied.

A blog can help you to create new and interesting content on your social networking profiles. By adding links to fun, interesting or useful posts you are increasing the amount of backlinks, and you may be winning favour with the search engine algorithms too. Twitter, Facebook and Google Plus all have a lot of weight when it comes to determining rankings, so get posting and encourage others to respond by sharing, retweeting, liking or giving a +1.

All of these reasons are good enough on their own, but when you combine them it is easy to see why a blog is so valuable in SEO. Talk to your webmaster or SEO reseller and discuss how a blog could be a major asset to your business, just like it has been for mine.

You may be interested in offering optimisation packages to your current and new clients. Becoming a SEO reseller is a great way to expand on your services and please your customers.
Guest blogging is becoming increasingly popular for companies from many different industries but not just for SEO. It has many other benefits in addition to helping your page rank or back links.

For those who are unsure, guest blogging is where a writer (guest) posts an article on someone else’s site. You may be thinking to yourself, “Why would I want my hard work to be published as someone else’s?” This article will answer that burning question.

Firstly, many sites that allow guest blogging will display an ‘author’ section at the bottom of the post, or enable you to set up your own author page. It varies from site to site. Beneficially, a lot of the sites that do offer this will also allow you to have an author’s biography section, a profile picture and a few links for your Twitter account, blog and homepage for example. So in essence, you do receive the credit for your hard work.

As well as having links in your author’s section, a lot of sites will permit links in your post, and these can be to your homepage or any other page you choose. This will create links to your site and depending on the site’s PageRank, they could be high authority which is greatly beneficial to you and your site.
Writing for other blogs can also help to publicise not only you but your company and help establish brand awareness. Obviously this will depend on how popular the blog is, but if you are writing for them you should check that their blog is of a high ranking and experiences a lot of traffic. There is no point writing a post for them if no-one is going to see it.

Writer’s block is something many suffer from time to time, but having another blog to write for can overcome this to a certain extent. A lot of the time your guest blogging sites will have specific topics they would like you to cover, and having these guidelines can really help you focus on your writing.

In being signed up to a guest blogging site with a high traffic site, your blogs are likely to be receiving a large number of views. This will result in more people being driven to your site through your links and if your name and company are everywhere it is a sign that you are a good, well-established business. This in turn will sway users and bring in more traffic to your site.

Like with any SEO technique in existence, there are the positives and the negatives. Guest blogging is no exception; each guest blogging site will want an individual post. If you are a blogger then you will understand a good post can take a few hours, therefore it is crucial that you weigh up each site with the time it will take you to write the post. Sometimes you can end up worse off from taking on guest blogging but it is all down to distributing your time accordingly. If you do this correctly you will see the benefits from guest blogging come to life before your very eyes.

Many SEO companies developing their websites in such a manner where they could also incorporate fresh content on a daily or weekly basis, this is because of the fact that search engines love fresh original content and by incorporating such in a static website it would help keeping their site up to date as well as search engine and user friendly.

This is why many SEO consultants are incorporating blog sites into their website. Blogs can accommodate multitude of posts and thus this would be effective in handling daily content posts that are required by the search engines as well as the users of such search engine. The only problem however is the type of content that should go into the blog post, obviously one should write something that would pertain or would be relevant to that of the products or services that is being offered by the website, company announcements could also go into the blog posts. To effectively write a blog post for your website it is imperative that your blog post should be relevant and useful, this means that you have to research and determine the majority of traffic that would be visiting your website, what is your target group or focus group so that you may be able to construct blog posts that are relevant to what they need or require, thus how-to’s or tutorials are the best types of blog posts that should go into your website.

Second, you also have to take into consideration that you will still also have to write for search engines therefore, you have to select your keywords carefully, choose the keyword or keyphrase that would most likely be utilised by the user or searcher when looking for products or services similar to what your website is offering.

Third exploit every opportunity you get in distributing or reaching a wider audience. Therefore, you have to integrate social bookmarking into every blog post you have, this could easily make your post go viral and thus inviting more traffic into your website.

Apart from writing for search engines we have to always remember that revenue will come from people who are visiting your website thus writing for them is a paramount consideration.

Every new year there is always something to look forward to, basically because of the fact that the new year is yet again another time and opportunity for people to make something extraordinary. Future trends can be predicted as culled from the present trends, in the field of search engine optimisation and for SEO experts the trends during the last quarter of the year is one of the most important time to observe the trends in SEO. The last quarter is an important time due to the fact that whatever are the current trends during this time it would play a big influence on the trends that may be exhibited during the coming year. Predicting the next big thing is very important because of the fact that those who are able to implement the trends would have a fresh unsaturated market which has therefore a big potential for earning or if it is an SEO strategy the chances of implementing it successfully is high.

For the coming year 2011 and looking back on what has happened lately in 2010 experts are predicting that Social Media Marketing is going to be a very indispensable tool for search engine optimisation. For the year 2010 we have seen the growth in the number of social media network users. The effect of social media such as Facebook, Twitter and even blogs has not yet been fully studied however it is a known fact that using these three services can actually increase link popularity for a target website.

On other parts of SEO the year 2011 is also predicted to be the year where the long tail keywords will have much more importance, this is why the meta element will again play a major role by accommodating these long tail keywords, it is however a challenge for every SEO companyon how to solve problems on keyword stuffing, the goal for 2011 therefore is to be able to fit all the keywords or key phrases on to the target website without your site being flagged for keyword stuffing.

In the field of website design the “rel” attribute in the anchor tag of HTML is not widely utilised for the sole reason that webdesign-wise there is no direct effect to the website, in the point of view of an SEO company or an SEO consultant on the other hand there is a big significance in terms of page ranking among others. The rel attribute is useful for many SEO companies especially if they are utilising blog campaign for the promotion of their website. Many blog software nowadays automatically includes comment form where anyone could just comment on your articles or posts. Commenting is not prohibited instead it is encouraged especially if such comments would spark discussions within the community, however commenting could be deemed as a spam when the comments would only be for the sole purpose of gaining backlinks and not taking into consideration the relevance or the quality of the comment being posted. These spammy comments are what many bloggers or website owners are combating because of the fact that links to the website of the person who commented are created when comments are posted in effect this would cause the passing of your web page’s reputation on to the site that is linked to. There may not be a problem on linking with the different sites through comments however one must always take a careful look on where the site is linking to because it might ultimately have an adverse effect on your blog’s page ranking or your blog’s reputation in general.
In order to solve this problem many SEO firms and SEO experts are using the “rel” attribute with the attribute value of “nofollow”. In effect the nofollow attribute value would tell the search engine not to follow crawling on to the other website thus saving your websites’ reputation from linking to a spammy website.
