Google has released an update inside Adwords, and it is all to do with location targeting. The update makes it possibly to target specific towns and even counties with your PPC campaign, this is a great feature and allows Google users to be as specific as they can with their campaigns.

Before Google released this update, there were two choices, you could choose a radius, or you could attempt to draw the area that you want to cover. Obviously there are a lot of issues with this because it is fairly inaccurate because at the end of the day it is all down to guess work. Guessing is the last thing you should be doing with PPC and Google has finally recognized that.

With the new update, just simply type in the town or county you want to target and it will come up with something like this:

It shows variations of what you have searched for, so you can get exactly where your targeting. Not only that, but it also provides you with how many people are in that area, so you can see how many potential customers you are reaching out to.

Once you have selected your area, it will show up like this.

As you can see this is a very detailed outline of the area, which is essential to targeting the right locations.

Conclusion

This update to Adwords is brilliant for PPC managers because it allows for precise targeting, this isn’t just something for the PPC ninjas out there, it can be used by the average Joe due to its’ simplicity in how it is set up. The only problem I have found is that it cannot target the smaller areas, like an area within a city. I found this by searching for Broomfield, which is in Chelmsford, and Chelmsford does show up on the precise targeting locations, but due to Broomfields’ small population (when compared to areas like London) it does not show. Google has obviously targeted the areas that are worth targeting and I think the problem I found will rarely pop up. All in all, great job on the update Google, this will give Adwords an easier usability by far.

Heavy users of Klout would have noticed the update on the K! system and from what I have seen, the majority are not impressed. I however am neither dissatisfied but I am not overjoyed. It has been raised that people don’t love Klout, they love their scores. Of course there is a certain amount of truth to this statement, it is a vanity feature to some and it makes those with a higher score feel important and so on.

My score was 60 and after the update I “dropped” to 51. That, however is just my K! score, my true reached shot up from roughly 150 to 1769! and I only have 220 followers on Twitter that to me is an insane increase. The rest of the fields stayed at the same sort of level.

My K! score should have a huge descent on the graph, but it hasn’t. It has remained at a steady increase, in fact, I have got +2 in 10 days, which is a whole lot better than dropping 9 marks in just a few days.

A lot of Klout users are declaring the analytics scores’ end, but is it? Klout is still in its’ beta stages and this is just another update that every beta has. They have made changes to their algorithm to make their score more accurate because previously one of the biggest questions about Klout was its’ accuracy. Fingers crossed this will fix the situation.

I have always used Klout as a way to track and measure my social media efforts, and now that it is “more” accurate, I will continue to use it because it is one of few systems that takes a wide variety of social networks and measures important statistics, for example true reach and influence.

Make the Decision to Use Competwition!

October 27th, 2011

Competwition is a brilliant website that is heavily dependent on the social networking phenomenon that is Twitter. Competwition, for those who haven’t guessed already, is an integration of competition and Twitter, which is Competwition in a nutshell.

Running contests on social media has always been one method of earning followers, and it most likely always will be. There is only one problem with running contests and that is for the social media campaigns that have just started, these contests go unnoticed. Competwition is a great site that displays your contest.

So How Does It Work?

Competwition allows different text to be entered, such as a description and even a tweet out message, also there is a legality section. You can add an image of the prize too! Once you create your contest, you send it off to be reviewed, now I had some trouble with this but one of the employees (Mark Bowering) responded to my submission and really helped me. He even submitted a new and improved version of the contest for me.

When your contest is live it will appear in the list of running contests on the competwition site, sometimes they will even tweet that you have been added to the listings. The contests that end soonest will appear on the first page and the competitions with a longer wait time will be towards the end.

If someone does enter your contest, they automatically follow your twitter account (you can choose any account you want), they also follow the Competwition Twitter account, AND they tweet a message of your choice, including a link to the contest.

The Results

Using this service really proved fruitful for my Twitter account, I ran the contest for a month and it still has four days left, in that space of time, Competwition has brought me 232 followers. There is no question that using Competwition has been an extremely beneficial process, and I will definitely continue to run contests through this site.

Just for comparison, before I started using Competwition, I had roughly 30 followers, but now, I have 234. Not to mention that there is still four days left on my contest, so I expect the numbers to creep up a little more.

Conclusion

Competwition is a great tool for increasing your following, it is something that everyone who is running a competition for their social media campaign should not only be aware of, but become a user of Competwition. It is a free service and if you’re running a contest, it will help massively to get the ball rolling, so without further ado, here is the link to Competwition https://competwition.com.

When Do I Need Reputation Management?

October 24th, 2011

In response to recent demand from clients, SEO Positive is proud to announce the launch of our brand new affordable reputation management packages. But what is reputation management, and when will you need to take advantage of the service now on offer from the UK’s leading SEO and PPC company?

Companies can achieve fantastic exposure by exploring the potential of the web. The internet offers up a vast catalogue of data to anyone searching for a bit of information about a company or product, which means that in order to be successful, business owners need to control their online reputation and take charge of their unique brand – normally, with a little bit of clever SEO, this can be achieved in only a few months. First impressions count for everything, and generating positive feedback about your products or services reassures your potential customers and establishes your company as reputable and trustworthy.

But remember, within this catalogue of data there is likely to be less-than-flattering opinions about your business. Just as consumers are able to post a positive review about your business, there are plenty of people out there who won’t think twice about tarnishing your name, and unfortunately there are a number of ways they can attack your brand.

So When Do I Need Help?

The best way to find out whether you require our reputation management services is by searching for your company, brand name, main products or most recognisable employees in the major search engines (namely Google, Yahoo! and Bing). Take a look at the results that appear underneath your search query. Users will look at everything they find and are specifically hunting to see if you’ve left a positive impression on customers (or anyone else, for that matter). Your website’s URL should come up, but what other sites, articles or reviews are associated with your name?

If You’ve Been Savvy:

There will be a diverse number of results returned and nearly all of these will be within your control. You’ll see social profiles, registered business listings, press releases and even internal web pages from your site, all of which will show your company in a good light. There are no obvious negative comments and potential customers will be able to find all the information they need (quickly and easily) that will convince them to choose your company over your competitors.

If You’ve Been Lucky:

There will still be a credible number of results returned for your search, but they won’t be well-crafted or particularly impressive, and in some cases may even be completely irrelevant. Users will immediately recognise that you’ve made no attempt to present yourself properly within the search engines, even if it’s a subliminal realisation, and while they won’t necessarily be turned off by your efforts, they may decide that a rival company will do a better job.

If You’ve Neglected Your Online Reputation:

You may have been unlucky in the sense that you’ve suffered negative press recently, or a particular patron has gone out of their way to post scathing reviews of your company online and the article or post is ranking highly and therefore extremely visible. Your brand name may have popped up one time too many amongst complaint sites, or perhaps it is other industry professionals that have been publishing a lacklustre opinion of your business. Even one prominently displayed public slating of your service can ruin your opportunities. This could include a Facebook group dedicated to negative feedback about your company or even an entire hate site built around a bad experience. Basically, if you don’t like what you see within the search engines, it’s time to employ a credible reputation management company to set things right.

What Can I Do To Improve My Online Reputation?

Businesses can, of course, attempt to boost their online rep themselves, but in doing so run the risk of damaging their campaign even further. We would always recommend getting in touch with a reliable reputation management company (such as SEO Positive) to discuss your options and to make sure you don’t end up making any costly mistakes.

Make sure consumers, businesses, employees and journalists take you seriously by establishing a clear reputation management strategy straightaway. Remember, if any type of negative review has been posted, it’s going to be discoverable for years to come if users are prepared to search deep enough – it’s just up to you and your chosen reputation management company to control what your audience sees from the offset to prevent a bad feeling materialising around your brand.

Social medias are great when it comes to raising brand awareness or connecting with a huge amount of potential customers for free. Social media marketing is getting more and more popular with websites like Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus. Anyone can sign up, log in and start creating their campaign and not pay any money at all. However, there is something else at stake here – time and effort. How do you know you are getting the right value for the time you have invested in marketing your business?

The return of investment is a factor which everyone is concerned about and it is logical that people would like to see measurable results. If your goal is to drive more traffic to your website, then you might want to know if your efforts actually result in sales (conversions).

There are two metrics which you should consider when it comes to measuring your social media marketing involvement and the results you get from it:

Klout Score – Klout is a website that gives you a “Klout Score” based on how influential you are on Facebook and Twitter. Your influence is mostly measured by how many friends/followers you have and how many each one of them has. Some critics say that the Klout Score is a useless metric because followers on Twitter can be bought easily and friends can be added effortlessly even if you don’t know them. However, considering how hard it is to measure something like online influence in the first place, Klout is actually helpful if you know your friends and you didn’t add them just to get a higher score (the same thing goes for Twitter).

Google Alerts – This tools is a bit more useful than the previous one. Google Alerts basically lets you know when your brand (or as specific keyword) has been mentioned online. You can easily find out if your popularity online increases with the number of alerts you receive. The more it grows the better.

Google Analytics – Google Analytics will actually help you find out if the visitors you get from your social media marketing campaigns are actually turning into sales. Recently, that wasn’t very easy to do but thanks to the new version of Google Analytics getting this kind of data is much easier. The most important thing you need to know about getting that data is how Google can find out if a visitor has actually bought anything from your website. You will need what is known as a “qualifying event”. A good idea is to tell Google that a sale has been made if the visitor lands on your “Thank you” page which only happens after a purchase. Google Analytics also offers a lot more helpful options you can play with.

As you can see, tracking your ROI and influence online is becoming easier than ever. The social media data is not so hard to get anymore and with improved tools like Google Analytics you can find out what your conversion rate is and if it is increasing or declining.

This addition to the case study is a revision on how many people have you in their Circles. The last time I measured this, the SEO Positive profile was added to 25 people, it now stands at 65 which is just over twice as much. For those that have not read the previous additions, here is part 1, part 2, part 3 and part 4.

It would seem that all of the key words, except from SEO, have acquired a sturdy position in the rankings, the term SEO has shot up quite a bit and the increase in Circles must have played a part in this.

I wanted to see the competitor’s profiles and inspect how many people have added them and the list is as follows.

There is clearly a correlation that states the more people that have added you, the higher you will show. This however, is clearly not one of the only factors because second place has twice the amount as position one. It is something that I think has an effect but there are other factors that make a difference.

These results are quite interesting. It seems that having someone in your circles does not help ranking factors. Those who have been keeping up with our previous additions to the case study will have noticed the drop in all positions. This may be because of the name change from SEO Positive to Lewis SEO Positive, I had to change because of Google’s name policy, I also had a look at the competition and they may not be as active as my profile but they do have a lot more people who have added them into their Circles, which could be the cause.

Now I need to test out the ‘friends of friends’ effect on the situation.

Having a friend of a friend that has the profile added does somewhat effect the results. Not extensively since the SEO Positive profile is still at the bottom of the rankings. However it does make a slight difference and for those niches that are slightly less competitive they may make a huge difference.

Conclusion

Whether you’re in someone’s Circles or not (even a mutual friends’ Circle) it doesn’t seem to make a huge amount of difference, so my advice would be to not spend much time worrying about this factor because chances are it won’t make much of an impact.

It’s been a while since we’ve updated our blog with some news about our SEO company. With Christmas and New Year fast approaching, we’re happy to announce that SEO Positive is still experiencing rapid growth and continued success, working in partnership with high-profile firms and smaller companies alike.

We know that the 2011-2012 festive seasons will be a make or break time period for many businesses. Many companies rely on this time of year to form the bulk of their revenue, and those that are advertising online will be keeping a close eye on their SEO and PPC efforts. Governments are warning that we’re sitting on a double-dip recession and more and more businesses are struggling to make ends meet. However, the majority of companies that have joined forces with SEO Positive and have invested in their online marketing campaigns are reporting dramatic increases in sales, enquiries and brand awareness thanks to our experience and expertise. While we can never guarantee results, our client retention rate still remains at approximately 97%, which implies that most firms on our books are satisfied with our service and the outcome of their on-going SEO and PPC campaigns.

We have also launched a brand new website, www.webdesignpositive.co.uk, which is acting as the face of our dedicated website design division. To cope with the increased load of enquiries (brought about by first-page exposure and intelligent Pay Per Click marketing) we have also employed a new developer in recent weeks. In fact, we’re proud to announce that we’ve taken on several new staff members in the past few months, expanding our sales, management and accounts departments to make sure that we can handle our ever-growing client base to the best of our abilities. The SEO Positive team has more than doubled in the space of a year, signalling our eagerness to provide the UK with even better services for 2012!

Stay tuned for more SEO Positive news as we sail into the New Year.

Since my optimization efforts yesterday, I have had a lot of people add me into their Circles, no doubt because of the mass circling I did in my last update. To be exact 25 people added my SEO Positive profile to their Circles. Also as a little side note, Google picked up on my profile name, which was SEO Positive. I thought it was ok to have this but I was forced to change it to my actual name which is Lewis SEO Positive, a little cheeky I know but worth a go right? I have also set a nickname as SEO Positive, instead of SEO Services.

For those that have missed my previous updates, here is part 1, and here is part 2.

25 people have added the SEO Positive profile into their Circles, a high majority of the new connections where already in my cCrcles which would most likely be the reason for the mass connections.

Unfortunately, there has been a negative impact for the term SEO, 5 positions where lost. All other positions have stayed put which is great. I think the position drop could be down to the profile name change but that is not certain, competitors could be overtaking the SEO Positive profile.

Something I did notice is that the profile now shows up in the “Everything” section and looks a little something like this.

This is great exposure because it’s the default option to appear when searching, as far as I know we show up like this in the search results for the terms: SEO UK, SEO Companies and SEO Services. As I have not noticed this before, I did not even know this type of listing was possible, I cannot say what has caused this. However these 3 terms I show in position 1 in the people listings, which leads me to believe that it is strongly connected.

Conclusion

Being in other users’ Circles appear to not have an effect on the rankings, however it will have an effect on whoever has added me and the results that appear. I imagine mutual friends will experience some change too, but I will look into this in the near future.
