Recently Gmail has blocked access to all users under the age of 13, jumping on the social media bandwagon so to speak. As Gmail is an email service, it does not make quite as much sense as to why Facebook, Twitter and other social networks have age restrictions for those under 13. Then again why would children want to be on Facebook and the other major networks in the first place?

The Under 13 Rule

The ‘under 13’ rule was put in place as governments believe users under the age of 13 are not responsible enough to use these services. In South Korea, the age limit is 14 due to local laws, as personal information can easily be given away to untrusted people. This kind of behaviour could result in dangerous consequences, such as grooming, for younger users, however it can also be dangerous to any user of any age and it is a drawback every user should be aware of.

Why Do Kids Want to Be on Social Networks?

Kids want to be on Facebook and other networks for many reasons. The most outstanding factor would probably be because of their friends and them being able to contact and share information with them. Another element is that it can appear somewhat glamorous as adults use the social media, another reason is the social gaming aspect which appeals to most children as not only can they play games, but also interact with their friends at the same time.

The Child Friendly Alternative

There are actually quite a few social networks that are specifically for kids, one of the most popular would be Club Penguin. Club Penguin is actually owned by Disney and is moderated quite well (for example any words that are not permitted are filtered out). This stops users being exposed to unsuitable language and prevents personal details being given out. With many child-orientated social networking sites, gaming is a heavy aspect but there is also the ability to talk to fellow members and interact with them.

Safety Precautions

All users of the internet, of any age, should be aware of the dangers that the internet does hold, such as identity theft and cyber bullying. As a result of this, the correct precautions need to be taken. Personal information should be very closely guarded and the sites that are visited needs to have some form of precaution, due to unwanted content or risk of virus’ and malware.

Conclusion

It is understandable why children want to be on sites like Facebook and Myspace, however at the end of the day they are not suitable and the age restrictions are there for a reason. There are plenty of alternatives that are specifically aimed at children and will provide the best experience in both safety and enjoyment.

Facebook rolled out their new privacy policies a few days ago but not only that, Facebook announced that they would be burying their Foursquare like app called Facebook Places. For those who have not used this app, Places is a check in application for your mobile device, so when you’re out and about you can tell your friends where you are and what you’re doing, in essence this is exactly the same as Foursquare and Places was a clear example of a corporation playing the “me too” game.

Places was released a year ago, and as previously explained, is a “check in” application which allows your friends to see where you are and what you’re doing. Facebook posed a considerable threat to other location based social networks like: Foursquare and Gowalla. The main reason that Facebook Places was considered a threat is because Facebook is the home to more than 750 million users, which means that Places has, or had, the best exposure that a location based social network could have, sadly by October, you could already see that the feature wasn’t catching on as it only received 6% of users actually trying it, that’s 45 million users, which is an astonishing amount, but when you look at the rest of Facebook, it is miniscule and barely visible, especially on the timelines.

Seen as Facebook are killing of Places, they are actually releasing something else, well it is more an incorporation into Facebook, as there is now the option to add a location to your status updates and media uploads. Adding a location to a status is a completely different concept as it doesn’t actually tell you where your friends are, it just tells you where they were, which defeats the object of the application. This location affiliated updates are, in my opinion, unlikely to catch on, there are many reasons as to why, for example the death of Places also the fact that users may not want their whole friend list to know where they are.

Conclusion

The death of Places is obviously a great thing for apps like Foursquare and Gowalla, the fact that Places never posed a threat to them is even greater. However the location based updates are not likely to catch on and if users do want their friends to know where they are, they will use a more specific and well put together app like Foursquare.

Hashtags on Twitter are quite common, but if you don’t know what they are or how they can be used, it can seem quite confusing, which is understandable, everyone has been there. Not only will you learn what a hashtag is, but you will also learn how to use it to its best potential.

What Are Hashtags?

Hashtags are the Twitter equivalent to keywords, they are commonly used for groups and events, but they can also be used for topics and any other subject. You will probably have seen a trending section, and this is the most talked about things on Twitter, hashtags are commonly found on this but sometimes just words appear. Hashtags are much more specific and targeted than words, as if you posted a tweet about SEO, then you could hashtag that and it would be more clear that the tweet was regarding SEO. Whereas if you did not include a hashtag, then the tweet would be less specific as the topic was not displayed.

How To Search For Hashtags

At the top of Twitter there is a search bar, so for example you wanted to find people who were talking about SEO, so you would use the hashtag #SEO, you will then be given a timeline for all tweets with #SEO in them in a real time format. There could potentially be a few promoted tweets, which are paid for advertising, but there are not many due to this being a new feature rolled out by Twitter.

How To Make The Most of Hashtags

As you can see, Hashtags have the potential to help your tweets become more noticed, this can result in more followers and also retweets depending on the nature of your post. So to make the most of hashtags, I recommend religiously including them into each tweet you post. It needs to be addressed that if you stuff your tweets full of hashtags, then the post starts to lose its’ meaning and becomes very spammy, I suggest a maximum of three hashtags in a post.

Conclusion

Hashtags can be very helpful, and it does take a bit of practice to get more comfortable with them, I urge you to begin using them in your tweets and you will see a noticeable increase in activity, although it is not an essential to use hashtags, but they will give you a slight boost in the Twitter world.

Mark Elliot Zuckerberg was born may 14th in the year 1984, Zuckerberg is an American internet entrepreneur and a computer programmer. His most famous creation was Facebook, as he is the co-creator and now the president and chief executive of the infamous social network. Mark worked with classmates: Chris Hughes, Dustin Moskovitz and Eduardo Saverin whilst studying at Harvard University. Time magazine named Mark Zuckerberg the person of the year in 2010 and by 2011, his personal wealth was valued at roughly $13.5 billion.

A film called “The Social Network” was released in 2010. Jessie Eisenberg stars as Mark and plays his college life and the beginning stages of Facebook. The film received a Golden Globe award for the Best Picture in 2011.

One of Zuckerbergs smaller projects was Wirehog, due to Facebook’s original purpose was for photo sharing, Wirehog was essential for it to function. However, Facebook has developed into something much more complex and Wirehog would not be able to support it because it was only used for file sharing between two people, but Facebook shares not only images but all ranges of media and information to an endless amount of users.

Facebook was launched in Marks’ Harvard dormitory in 2004. Although the Facebook that is well recognised today was not what it originally was, it was originally a photo sharing programme exclusive for those on the campus, for a full history of Facebook, visit our infograph. The social network we all know as Facebook is now estimated to be worth $50 billion, this is an obvious sign for Zuckerbergs wealth and his success.

SEO and Personal Branding

August 23rd, 2011

As an SEO company, our main focus is to increase the awareness of businesses, no matter how small their budget and how large their expectations. However, search engine optimisation isn’t just used by the big corporations for search engine domination – SEO is an essential component of your very own personal branding campaign too!

Individuals are increasingly turning to the major search engines as their resource of choice. If you’re looking to enhance your career or ‘sell’ yourself as an expert within a particular arena, where better to go than the web? You’re up against the major players and your shrewdest competitors, but the exposure is second to none. Users will ‘Google’ your name before they’ll pick up the phone to give you a call, so you need to be sure that the information they find is as relevant and flattering as possible.

Creating a solid online reputation is a must for anybody who relies on the internet to showcase their skills and attributes. You could be trying to carve out a niche in a certain market with the use of a blog; you might be a budding entrepreneur looking to get your name out there with the help of carefully-managed social media campaigns and clever networking. Perhaps you want to leave your mark within a particular industry and wish to be known as a knowledgeable and influential individual within your chosen field – whatever the reason for your personal branding endeavours, there are several factors that you have to bear in mind when setting yourself up for net success.

The largest components of effective personal branding are a fully-functional website and a blog that is fresh and regularly updated. Both of these platforms benefit from good SEO work and the same principles apply as if you were approaching SEM strategy for a business or an online shop. There are many arguments for and against both personal websites and blogs, but we recommend that you set up both for maximum reach on the web, just as you would if you were trying to raise awareness of your products or services. The website acts as a functional source of information for potential employers, customers and the like, whereas the blog is a true reflection of your latest thoughts and activities (and is also much easier to maintain on a regular basis, especially if you’re not particularly tech-minded).

Building your reputation is a time-consuming process that should never be undertaken lightly. The commonly discussed downside to the internet is that any unwanted data is readily available indefinitely – it’s hard to mask any unwelcome feedback or damning reviews and all information you provide must be as accurate and truthful as possible if you’re going to earn your fans’ trust. This is why SEO is especially useful when it comes to personal branding. With intelligent reputation management and sharp page promotion, you can place yourself in a position to be seen – for all the right reasons.

Luckily, the majority of the approaches undertaken by business-minded SEO consultants are applicable when it comes to personal branding. Researching and deciding upon your most relevant keywords is, of course, the first step. Then comes the backlinking process, which you are able to experiment with yourself if your budget is extremely limited. Reaching out to sites of similar interests and topics is essential, not only to improve the relevancy and rank of your pages, but to raise your profile in the professional circles that matter to you. There’s a lot written about link building on the web and much of the information conflicts with general opinion, but the general rule of thumb is to link to sites that have a great reputation and will generate the best buzz around your work or personality. Then, consider making use of the huge range of social network sites out there and make it easy for users to get in touch.

Of course, it’s best to get in touch with a reputable SEO company for that extra advice and guidance, as you’ll see faster results and an improved ROI. There are plenty of affordable SEO options for individuals wishing to gain that extra edge on the web!

The 4 Fails of SEO

August 22nd, 2011

There are obviously more than 4 fails in the world of SEO, but these appear to be the most common, the most pointless or the most annoying for users. Many webmasters have tried to game Google to get the best out of the SERP’s by using different SEO techniques, but the fails of SEO are consistently black hat methods, they are frowned upon by Google and they are strongly disagreed with by many SEO’s as they do not provide long term results, only short term. So let the 4 fails of SEO be presented to you so your website and yourself will benefit from a higher SERP and not being blacklisted by Google.

Cloaking

Cloaking is showing information to the search engine and then something completely different to the user. So when a search engine visits your page, it finds a really well optimised page which will do very well in the search listings, however when a user logs onto your site, they find something completely different. Google states in their guidelines that they will penalise websites for this, and they will eventually find out, it is just a case of when

Frames

Frames are something your webmaster should know of, but basically frames are a way of bringing in information from other webpages without showing it to Google. Google’s robots cannot read frames, so by using them you are wasting content that could be seen and potentially help your SERP’s.

Hidden Texts and Links

Hiding texts and links is a simple process, just change the text or link to the same colour as your background. This can be confused with cloaking but all the information is on page, but it is not visible. Again this will help you in the SERP’s but Google will eventually find out and penalise your site.

Page Redirects

Now you know yourself if you are searching for a page and get redirected to something completely irrelevant on another site, or even the same site. It annoys you, so why would you want to annoy your visitors? Not only does that but Google not approve of this type of behaviour and punshes sites accordingly.

Conclusion

Google has always done their best to provide the best user experience with their listings, and they are constantly updating and modifying their algorithms to provide the most relevant results for their users.
Google Related to What?

Google’s new; Google Related toolbar or extension was released on the 16th of August. As explained in Google’s video of the Related feature, the toolbar shows relevant information to the web page that you are viewing. The information ranges quite a lot, from web pages to all sorts of media; Related shows you most relevant content on the web.

The Related feature is available on both Chrome and Internet Explorer. Now as I have previously discussed, in a comparison of the browsers, Google’s Chrome and IE are the biggest browsers going, this gives the related feature possibly the biggest exposure possible.

Usability

The toolbar pops up at the bottom of your chosen browser and is relatively small considering the information that is displayed.

The information is categorized and laid out quite neatly. I think this is quite simple considering how complex the actual idea of it is. Another good feature of Related is that it shows an image of the page or piece of media that is displayed, so at first glance you know what is available.

One of the most convenient things about Related is that when media is shown, you are not redirected to another page, you can actually stay on page and view the video. I think this is a great feature as it makes receiving information easier than ever, and more things are in one place.

So How Does It Work?

I have conducted my own trial and error research, attempting to understand how this tool works. Now I started on our home page, SEO Positive, and I control F’d (found) how many times SEO popped up. Now when I looked at the related pages… there was a definite trend between the amount of keywords, and the pages that are less relevant obviously have less keywords. I can safely say that the Related tool does not just pick up on one keyword, it uses all keywords and searches through Google’s index to find the most related pages.

The site that leads me to believe this was HPSEO, now HP in this sense, stands for High Position, and this phrase crops up frequently on their site. As a result of this, other irrelevant pages and media showed up, also due to the fact that they also used the term High Position often. This gives me evidence that Related picks up on all keywords and finds other sites using keywords to a similar frequency.

What Does This Mean for SEO?

There are, from what I have already seen, a few effects that Related is going to cause. The first would be that pages with lower SERP will see a decrease in the amount of traffic they receive; this is due to users being able to visit the top sites and navigate to similar sites through Google Related.

Another factor is that brand names that are not huge, will share relevancy with companies who happen to have similar names, even if they are in a completely different niche. This is likely to annoy users as in actual fact it is not related at all, however it is extremely difficult for a program to make a judgement like that. Although companies with a huge brand awareness will not experience this problem, if anything this could actually benefit them, and I think that in most cases it will.

Finally the last effect I can forsee is that if Google Related proves to be popular, then we will see web sites attempting to game this tool, I can imagine that they will target keywords on a competitors page and make sure their site comes first in the related section.

Conclusion

Google’s Related tool is, at the end of the day, a useful tool. I know I will continue to use it, however other users can find toolbars to be a bit of a nuisance, that being said this extension could change everything or it may just gather dust. I would recommend to experiment with this tool and prepare yourself for what could happen.

Building links and creating quality content go hand in hand, and you need both for a successful website. Without links, you will not be able to rank highly in the SERPs. However, without exceptional content, you will not get return visitors or you will have low conversion rates and low profits.
Here are some actionable steps you can take immediately to optimize your link building campaign:

• Using the right landing pages for link building
• Using varied link anchor texts
• Diversifying your incoming link sites
• Maintaining a steady link velocity

Using the Right Landing Pages for Link Building

Even if you are able to generate good incoming traffic to your web pages, it will not mean much if you are not converting your visitors into sales, registrations, subscriptions, etc. The most important aspect of high conversion rates is the landing page.

As you are building links to your site, you need to create proper landing pages for your targeted keywords. The page should be designed to hook the reader with eye-catching text and graphics. The layout should not be too “busy” that it confuses or frustrates the visitor. In particular, do not try to cram too much small text into the page.

Web surfers like pages that can be quickly digested with short paragraphs and plenty of “white space.” Create the landing page so that the eye of the visitor is quickly led to your call to action. Place more detailed information on pages linked to the landing page.

The call to action is an important part of the landing page. One big mistake that web designers make is forcing the visitor to browse through many pages before reaching the closing pitch that asks for a sale, registration, share or other action.

Using Varied Link Anchor Texts
The link anchor texts play an important role in SEO and your search engine rankings for targeted search terms.. Many web marketers use the same keywords or key phrases repeatedly thinking that repetition will improve rankings.

However, you do not want the search engine ranking algorithms to sense that your links are related or forced. For this reason, you should vary the anchor text as much as possible, not just because of that, but also to add more relevance authority to your pages. Of course, you want to use related keywords each time, but the links should appear independent.

Diversify Your Link Source Sites
In order to make your links look as natural as possible, they should come from as many different types of websites as possible. For example, solicit links from blogs, directories, social media, communities and specialized sites. By diversifying the sources of your links, you make your link profile appear as “natural” as possible rather than looking like the result of a marketing campaign.

One way to encourage links is to place sharing and rating buttons on your web pages and most importantly a simple link to us page, it is amazing how many great websites are missing that. There are amazing plugins that can help you with that, like the Copylink WordPress plugin. A Facebook “Like” button, for example, makes it easy for visitors to share your pages on their Facebook newsfeed. If others on Facebook also like the page, they can share it again on their own profile.

You can also place rating and bookmarking buttons on your web pages. For example, the new Google+ button allows you to give a thumbs-up to any page. The Facebook, Google+ and Twitter buttons are important also because they are used in search result social annotations.

Since Google’s SERPs are lead by personalization this is no more important than ever.

Creating great updated content is also essential in getting different sites to link to your pages. Add content that you know others will want to share on their pages. Of course, by being among the first to publish content, you will have better chances of having others link to your site.

Don’t forget though to solicit links from pages that have high ranking or authority. The pages and sites should have high relevance to the keyword topics.

Maintain Link Velocity and Stick with Your Plan
In order to wage a successful link building campaign, it is important to have a plan and to stick with it consistently. Most links go stale after a period of time and your page can lose ranking if fresh links are not appearing. If your pages receive links for a longer period of time that tells the search engines that the content there is evergreen and the rankings will stick or even improve if there is room.

The rate at which your pages and site gain and lose links is known as link velocity. The speed in which links lose “juice” will depend on the quality and the type of link. For example, links from blog sites are more likely to have a longer lasting positive impact than shares on social media. Because of the transient nature of social media, you will need a steady stream of shares to boost your rankings. While a link from a blog can get even more powerful with time.

In order to stay ahead of the competition, link building must be a continuous effort just like other types of marketing. Allot a certain amount of time per day or per week to maintaining your links.

Have a schedule for checking over each item related to your link building and to your site’s content. Remember that everyone is competing for the top spots in the SERPs, so you must be energetic and diligent to gain the top search engine rankings.

If your company hasn’t already begun carving out an online presence it might be difficult to know where to start. However, there’s no real reason why you should believe that search engine optimisation isn’t the marketing strategy that would best suit your business. We at SEO Positive believe that your website is one of the most crucial investments you’ll ever make, so why not promote it as much as possible?

Money is of course one of the most important considerations for any organisation. SEO has a reputation for being a costly affair due to the amount of time your SEO company must spend analysing and tweaking your strategy. You’ll be surprised to find, however, that a little extra expenditure in the early stages can instigate great rewards further down the line. Various reports, including that of the respected SEO authority eConsultancy, have found that SEO generates a higher return on investment compared to the more traditional email marketing technique. Business owners can often be put off by the amount of patience required once they’ve undertaken the search engine optimisation – it can be difficult to measure real results during the first phase of the campaign and it can be several months before a true increase in enquiries or sales is noticeable. But remember, once you’re up there achieving first page positions, you’ve not only gained more recognition but generated awareness of your brand and your services as a whole, which can only aid your reputation!

Smaller businesses may perhaps believe that SEO is a waste of time because they’re only interested in targeting the local area. Posting leaflets through letterboxes and attending local trade fairs will only get you so far - the truth is, more and more people are turning to the internet and, more importantly, the search engines to find the services or products they need. Keep up with your competitors by talking on the search engines for maximum exposure. Geo-targeting, or targeting search terms that refer to a particular region, is an incredibly effective way of drawing in relevant traffic and can actually work out to be cheaper than aiming to cover the entire country.

If you don’t sell your products or services directly from your website, you may wonder why it’s important for consumers to come across it in the first place. You may not have anticipated receiving very much interest from web users, but why not try and generate business from as many different portals as possible? Search engine optimisation drives footfall to your web pages, but in order to retain the attention of the user you need to convince them that they need your business. Even the simplest brochure website can contain crucial contact details, and, when clearly designed calls to action are combined with well-written content and informative text, those who stumble across your site may be convinced to give you a call.

Key phrases are one of the biggest considerations when it comes to formulating an SEO strategy, and many website owners find it difficult to think in the shoes of their target market. This is where employing an SEO company comes in really handy, as you’ll benefit from the outside perspective and a fresh approach to your online promotions. Your firm will be able to suggest alternatives to simply targeting the generic key terms and will work your keyword selection around realistic expectations, eliminating the frustration and worry from day one.

Lastly, we recognise that SEO might seem like an overwhelming prospect for many business owners. The myth remains that the art of search engine optimisation is shrouded in secrecy and cannot be achieved without the help of specialist staff. Actually, you can do a lot of research into SEO techniques and tricks yourself before you even consider employing an SEO consultant. You may think that you’ll never be able to take on your largest rivals, especially if you’re very new to the web, but by clue-ing yourself up on the latest SEO trends and utilising the expertise of an experienced SEO consultant, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t become a serious contender for those much-coveted first page positions.

Remember, if you still think SEO isn’t for you, there are plenty of other options available. Pay Per Click marketing is best suited to businesses who want to achieve more sales, fast, whereas strategies such as display advertising tap into the psyche of your potential consumers and target a much more specific demographic. Regardless of your current SERPs or your marketing budget, get in touch with SEO Positive today to discuss the ways in which these kind of marketing methods can boost your business – both online and offline.

SEO and Journalism

August 11th, 2011

We’ve talked a lot about the impact of SEO on social media platforms, but, if you’re a news reporter, journalist or other general media professional, how can you use search engine optimisation to your advantage? More and more users are turning to the web to search for breaking news, as the internet provides the masses with an easily-accessible, real-time news feed, ensuring that the population is kept up to date with current events second by second.

As an example, way back in 2009 the BBC announced that it was to start optimising its headlines for better SERPs and many other broadcasters have followed suit. This has resulted in a highly competitive battle for first page positions and triggered most online journos and bloggers to consider the advantages of good SEO.

Writing for web users is entirely different to writing for print. It’s true that great content will engage readers no matter where it is published, but as the internet is an ever-changing medium that‘s greatly influenced by the impatience of its users, you need to consider a couple of different points if your articles are going to gain the online recognition and attention they deserve. Creating web-friendly content is the first step towards successful search engine optimisation.

Your headline is the most important part of your post. With so many other similar articles to choose from (from countless different sources), you need to be sure that your tagline offers something particularly attractive and unique. You also need to make sure that the subject of your piece is clearly stated at the very beginning of your title. Remember that your article might not be immediately recognisable as relevant to a particular subject (and therefore to a specific target audience) - readers will find your post as a result of a search but more often than not will come across it in amongst a never-ending feed of unrelated articles.

Including your most important keywords and search phrases in your title will also aid your SEO efforts, as it’ll be more likely to achieve great rankings within the major search engines. The bots indexing your site consider your title tag to be one of the most crucial elements when it comes to matching up your post with a user’s specific search.

Naturally, these tips condemn the use of puns in your titles. Stylistically, many writers rely on wit to grab the attention of the reader, but you need to be sure that the wording you choose won’t affect your relevancy to a particular topic. By all means be creative but consider the impact on your SERPs.

Make sure your article meets the criteria that will ensure it’s indexed by the Google News feed. This kind of exposure is second-to-none. There are no clear guidelines as to how to achieve this but plenty of discussions raging within online forums, and even a few vague points released by Google itself. The general gist of the ideas gathered by journalists encourage writers to include a visual element such as a relevant image in your post, not posting an article that’s simply a video or a graphic, and not updating your article once it’s been published (instead, post an entirely new piece).

Regardless of what you’ve heard, keyword stuffing is frowned upon. There’s been a lot of argument recently as to the ‘ideal’ keyword density for SEO and no SEO experts can agree on the exact figure. With the recent updates to Google’s algorithms, most now believe that quality content surpasses the need for keyword repetition and will be ranked according to its relevancy and value. Stick with your writing style and make sure that your text is likeable and informative.

Once you’ve written what you consider to be the perfect article, there are a number of tricks you can employ to extend your exposure even further. Linking is a huge part of successful search engine optimisation and can be easily achieved. Simply link back to your homepage, use keyword-rich, text-based anchor links to direct the user back to previous articles that might be of interest to the reader, link to interesting sources that will compliment your post – all of these techniques will not only impress the search engines but will make sure that your reader is gaining as much from your post as possible. After all, you’re ultimately writing your article for humans, not bots!

The mention of the human element brings us to the last point. The internet thrives on the ability to share links and information between infinite numbers of users. Once your post has been published, don’t just simply sit back and wait for it to be found. Actively promote your work and develop a standing within relevant circles. Make it easy for your readers to share your posts via social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and now, of course, Google+ - set up accounts with these networks and dedicate a certain amount of time to gaining fans and recognition. This move will not only generate a huge amount of interest in your articles, it will also work in your favour when it comes to SEO. Search engines are gauging the importance of social signals in its ranking process, so the amount of ‘likes’, ‘tweets’ and ‘plus 1s’ you receive will be a great indication of your new-improved online presence!
