Google + has experienced a traffic decrease in the U.S. A report from Hitwise explains that not only traffic, but average user time spent on site decreased.

Google + now has had 1.79 million visits this week, just in the U.S., this is a drop of 3% for Google, now it must be said that 3% is not much and that 1.79 million visits in one week is astonishing. Nevertheless, it must be picked up on.

Not only has the number of visits fallen, but also the average time spent on site has also dropped. Average time spent on site has in fact dropped by 10% which means users are roughly spending around 6 minutes on the site.

Globally, last week Google + received 20 million unique visits. This is an astonishing amount of visits and it clearly shows that Google + has the ability to become the social networking king.

In defence of Google + it has to be said that it is still operating in its Beta stages. It is not completely open to join and you must be invited by an existing user in order to set up your own account. Google + is still undergoing updates and, imaginably, Google are now working their socks off to create the best social network they can. In addition Google has many other projects on the go and they cannot devote all of their attention to dramatically improving their social network. Google Panda 2.3 was recently released, another example of one of the company’s latest developments (and as you will know this is a point of interest as the change greatly affects SEO).

In conclusion, Google + is not suffering from users becoming less interested, this is a case of it still being in its development phase. There is no question that Google + will explode, more than it has already, when it is launched for general use in the near future.

There are a mass of companies that sell Twitter followers and Facebook likes, and with the Google +1 button becoming increasingly popular, it is of no surprise that people are selling those also. Having thousands of likes, followers and +1’s are great, but I pose this question to you, are they worth more when they are acquired authentically?

Twitter Followers

I start with the example of Twitter, possibly my favourite to defend my view. The whole point of Twitter is to share information with others (your followers) and receive information (from the people you’re following), that is fairly self-explanatory. So if you pay for thousands of followers this could mean your status updates are being received by people who don’t actually care what you have to say, or you as a tweeter, have no interest in them. This clearly defeats the object of Twitter, plus, it is not like you can gain any SEO advantage from purely using Twitter, as all the links are no follows, so they provide no advantage to you. The only benefit I can see from purchasing followers is it looks impressive, however if someone was to look at the followers list, then it is clear to see that they are all fake, probably down to the fact all the pictures are all eggs and they have not tweeted much. So even the fact that you have a colossal amount of followers could well serve to be a downfall as it is obvious when companies have paid for followers.

Facebook Likes

With regards to Facebook Likes, the system is very similar to Twitter. Facebook Likes only make your page appear to be more developed than it already is, but again if some research is done into the page, then you can tell from how many other pages that they have liked that is has obviously been paid for.

Google +1′s

Finally I come to Google’s +1 feature. Currently you cannot see who has +1’d a page, however in the future once Google + is fully operational this will no longer be a concern. On a positive note, the +1 button does have some SEO factors and it does help with SERPs. It is expected that the magnitude of the +1 button regarding SEO will increase.

In conclusion, the money you will end up spending on followers, likes and +1’s is definitely not worth the benefit of having a higher number displayed under your name or page, it could be completely pointless and could do more bad than good. A suggestion would be to put as much effort into your social networking pages as you would money for real results.

Guest blogging is becoming increasingly popular for companies from many different industries but not just for SEO. It has many other benefits in addition to helping your page rank or back links.

For those who are unsure, guest blogging is where a writer (guest) posts an article on someone else’s site. You may be thinking to yourself, “Why would I want my hard work to be published as someone else’s?” This article will answer that burning question.

Firstly, many sites that allow guest blogging will display an ‘author’ section at the bottom of the post, or enable you to set up your own author page. It varies from site to site. Beneficially, a lot of the sites that do offer this will also allow you to have an author’s biography section, a profile picture and a few links for your Twitter account, blog and homepage for example. So in essence, you do receive the credit for your hard work.

As well as having links in your author’s section, a lot of sites will permit links in your post, and these can be to your homepage or any other page you choose. This will create links to your site and depending on the site’s PageRank, they could be high authority which is greatly beneficial to you and your site.
Writing for other blogs can also help to publicise not only you but your company and help establish brand awareness. Obviously this will depend on how popular the blog is, but if you are writing for them you should check that their blog is of a high ranking and experiences a lot of traffic. There is no point writing a post for them if no-one is going to see it.

Writer’s block is something many suffer from time to time, but having another blog to write for can overcome this to a certain extent. A lot of the time your guest blogging sites will have specific topics they would like you to cover, and having these guidelines can really help you focus on your writing.

In being signed up to a guest blogging site with a high traffic site, your blogs are likely to be receiving a large number of views. This will result in more people being driven to your site through your links and if your name and company are everywhere it is a sign that you are a good, well-established business. This in turn will sway users and bring in more traffic to your site.

Like with any SEO technique in existence, there are the positives and the negatives. Guest blogging is no exception; each guest blogging site will want an individual post. If you are a blogger then you will understand a good post can take a few hours, therefore it is crucial that you weigh up each site with the time it will take you to write the post. Sometimes you can end up worse off from taking on guest blogging but it is all down to distributing your time accordingly. If you do this correctly you will see the benefits from guest blogging come to life before your very eyes.

Many web users are unaware that there is in fact a committed organisation that monitors the core principles of the internet. SEO companies, however, are well aware of this governing body. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C for short) takes the objectives of the internet into consideration, such as the concept of sharing, interaction on a global scale and accessibility, and works to effectively standardize the web. W3C as an organisation fundamentally addresses the issues that affect a large number of web users and seeks to iron out the discrepancies between regions and platforms.

W3C was established in 1994 at Massachusetts Institute of Technology Laboratory for Computer Science by the ‘creator’ of the world wide web, Tim Berners-Lee. The consortium was initially backed by the European Commission and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, sometimes referred to as DARPA. Berners-Lee noticed the inconsistency between web pages, for example in the case of HTML code (another of his inventions), and set up the organisation to make sure that the internet is accessible to users of all culture, backgrounds and resources.

There are several different committees involved in the organisation and a whole host of members.
Google has waved goodbye to their Lab projects. There are a variety of views and opinions as to why this has happened and it’s understandable that many are taken aback by the decision as it is such huge news. There can however only be one solid reason and after all is said and done, only Google knows why.

For those of you who are unfamiliar, Google Labs is a theme park for adventurous Google users. Google Labs gave its users the opportunity to play around with Google’s ideas and prototypes. Not only do users get a chance to test out these products, but they can also give direct feedback to the engineers of Google. Every feature put into action by Google once came from Google Labs and has been perfected to its current level, for example Google Maps.

PC World stated that the Godzilla of search engines were closing their Lab projects to focus on the development of essential services and products for the future.

“While we’ve learned a huge amount by launching very early prototypes in Labs, we believe that greater focus is crucial if we’re to make the most of the extraordinary opportunities ahead,” Bill Coughram, senior vice president for research and development at Google Inc. wrote in his blog post.

After considering the different possibilities, it is quite clear that this “focus” is going to be heavily concentrated on Google +. As it stands, the only organisation that stands in the way of Google dominating social media is Facebook, so it is understandable why some might say Google is gearing all of its resources towards annihilating Facebook.

Many are and will be sad to see Google Labs go, due to the innovative tools that just won’t be available, but every cloud has a silver lining and there is no doubt that Google will use this to an advantage.

So we’ve dealt with the technical aspects of copywriting, but how do you learn to write with that enviable charisma and style that keeps the users interested and reduces your bounce rate? The psychological side of sales writing is intricate but interesting and something that all SEO companies or SEO specialists should consider. Below are several points to bear in mind if you really want to play on the instincts of your audience without coming across as too pushy and intimidating.

Users are not interested in how much you love your product. Along the same lines, if they want a detailed profile of your products or services they’ll go elsewhere on the site – the sales copy is intended to convey the real advantages of what you’re offering. You need to SELL your business and there’s no better way to do this than to point out how your products or services are going to benefit your potential customers.

To do this effectively, you need to give the user examples of the benefits in action. Part of good sales writing is to convince the user that they really can’t live without your product. Because the reader will automatically associate the relevancy of your product to their personal circumstances, you need to demonstrate how your product has helped consumers similar to them in the past. Short and simple stories are most effective. This can also be achieved by positioning flattering testimonials either in the body of the text or elsewhere on the page.

People like imagery. Using great metaphors and analogies will capture the imagination of the user and sustain their interest, and also prevent your text from becoming too uniform and stale.

A good technique to consider when writing sales copy is the ‘so what?’ philosophy. If your reader finds themselves asking ‘so what’ at any stage they’re likely to become uninterested. Discourage this by putting yourself in the consumer’s shoes. Cover all bases, explore every eventuality and tell the user why they should be excited by your product or service and everything it can do for them on a personal level.

Exploit the emotion of your reader to a certain degree. Individuals will first make a decision based on their emotional response to the text and tend to think about the finer details later on. For as long as possible, curb the urge for the reader to start thinking logically and ensure they have been persuaded to justify their need for your services or products. ‘Do the thinking’ for the reader and provide them with as many positive aspects to your services as possible before they find themselves beginning to dwell on the negatives. The positive aspects generally evoke good emotion; the negative aspects will pre-empt the logic.

Avoid making hollow promises to your readers. A good example is the use of the word ‘guarantee’ – unless you really can guarantee everything you’re claiming it’s best to avoid its use altogether. Readers are very quick at discarding copy that seems too good to be true as a standard, hollow marketing tactic and you need to inspire confidence in your business by proving that what you intend to deliver is possible.

Sometimes it’s effective to create a sense of urgency within the text. If readers are told that they can only get hold of these great deals for a limited time, they’re more likely to buy sooner rather than later. However, avoid lying to your audience or bullying them into making a purchase when that same deal will still be on offer the next time they visit your site.

Finally, ALWAYS finish your sales copy with a clear call to action. Let the user know what they need to do next and how to go about it. This could include a link to another page or clearly displayed contact details.

Sales copy is intended to persuade the reader to support a particular opinion or view. In the context of the web, copy is used to sell the ideas, services or products of a particular website and motivate users to enquire further or purchase an item. This kind of sales text can also be used for ads, email marketing and social media profiles. Generating well-written, captivating text for your web pages is essential, especially as part of your search engine optimisation campaign – it’s also important to make sure that all the content on your website is unique otherwise you may be penalized by the search engines (duplicate content looks suspicious).

To make sure their site copy is of the best quality available, businesses will normally outsource their copywriting to qualified professionals, but if this isn’t a viable option for you there are simple copywriting principles you can follow to achieve similar results. It’s also best to consult a reputable SEO company or SEO specialist for some handy advice.

Identify the theme or the message of the copy – and stick to it. Users want to read clear, concise text that doesn’t digress from the main idea.

Set yourself a word count and don’t exceed it. Again, this won’t just help you out in terms of time management, but keeps the text direct and to the point.

Don’t be afraid of redrafting. You’re unlikely to get it right first time, so make sure you take time out to explore different structures and approaches to your sales copy.

Use short sentences to convey clear points. If your sentences are too long you run the risk of rambling and the text will look poorly constructed. As an additional note, try to limit the use of adjectives, as these can water down the content and distract readers from the idea behind the fancy words.

Make your strongest points at the beginning of the text and expand on them later. This is an easy way to grab the attention of the user.

Remember that internet browsers are impatient. They will often only spend a couple of seconds weighing up your page, and if it’s too difficult for them to find the information they need they’ll simply go somewhere else. Make your main points easy to find, perhaps with the use of well-placed titles.

Use your chosen keywords as the basis of your copy. It’s more important to make sure the text reads well than focusing solely on how many times your keywords are repeated, though.

Your keywords should also be used cleverly in the titles.

Finally, have a thorough read through the text before you add it to your page. You’ll be surprised how many spelling mistakes and grammatical errors get overlooked at the end of the writing process. Think carefully about how you want your text to be positioned on the page, too, as it needs to be noticeable and seize the attention of your potential customers.

The majority of people struggle to understand SEO fully but to make matters even more confusing there are actually three types of SEO. White, black and grey hat SEO, are all different approaches to search engine marketing and there is a major difference between them and the consequences associated with each practice

White Hat SEO

White hat SEO is a technique which is used to raise a web site’s search engine results page (SERP). First of all, it is essential to understand how search engines work. Search engines work by categorizing web pages by keywords, for example if a web page was selling “toys” and was targeting that word it would be categorized as “toys”, so it would not show up for something like “furniture” as it would be irrelevant.

The four main elements of white hat SEO are: providing relevant keywords, regular content updating, analysing search results using Google Analytics and interlinking with other sites.

Relevant Keywords

Providing relevant keywords applies to the whole of your website. It is important to have your keywords in your title and headings. Bear in mind that your title and headings don’t have to contain keywords exclusively; you can put other words in to make it more useable and reader-friendly.

Also something a lot of websites forget to do is include keywords in the Meta description. The Meta description is the ‘snippet’ of information that shows below the URL on search engines. Not only does using this correctly help your SERP but it also influences your users and can sway people towards entering your site.

As for any form of multimedia it is important to put keywords into the description and the name. Remember that crawlers can only read HTML code so it is essential that you give the crawlers enough relevant information.

Regular Content Updating

It is crucial to keep your content fresh; you need to update your content for many reasons, possibly the most important is that it massively helps your SERP, as Google loves fresh, unique, keyword rich and relevant content. Also it’s recommended to keep it updated because Google’s algorithms may change and you may need to accommodate for that, plus you may change your mind regarding the keywords you want to target. Getting into the good habit of updating your content will make it much, much easier should your strategy change in the future.

Analysing Your Site

You should analyse your site regularly, and to do so I suggest setting up Google Analytics. Analysing your site means you can fully understand the events of your site, then you will be able to take appropriate action accordingly. Checking regularly means you can see something potentially damaging happening to your site, but you can stop it before it is too late and, in such concerning cases, save your business.

Interlinking With Other Sites

Having other pages linking to your site massively affects the position of your site and will affect your page ranking. It also raises awareness of your site but more importantly, Google’s crawlers see these links and interpret them as a recommendation. And it’s clear that the more recommendations your site gets the better, right?

Black Hat SEO

Black hat SEO uses techniques that go against the search engines’ guidelines. The method involved does give quick results; however you will be caught out at some point and will be banned from the search engine. The famous example of BMW may be of interest; they used black hat techniques and were banned by Google as a result. https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/4685750.stm .

The burning question is, is an appearance on page one worth being blacklisted for? I personally think it isn’t and I would strongly urge anyone to avoid black hat SEO at all costs.

Here are the main techniques involved in black hat SEO: keyword stuffing, doorway pages, cloaked pages, link farming and hidden text.

It is crucial for everyone to have an understanding of black hat techniques, because if your site is being optimized than you can decide whether the correct work is being done and if it isn’t then you have the knowledge to do something about it.

I will stress one more time that black hat SEO is against the guidelines, that’s the whole idea of it, but the search engine will eventually find out and you will be banned, there is no doubt about that. If a company as huge as BMW where banned then it can happen to anyone.

Grey Hat SEO

Grey hats SEO uses techniques from both black and white hat SEO, but remember that using any quantity of black hat techniques can get you banned eventually.

In conclusion, white hat SEO is highly recommended, it may take a bit longer, but you run no risk of being banned and the quality of your site will be very high. At SEO Positive we use only white hat techniques for our clients and we have seen great returns from this method.

A code noted by most reputable SEO companies, the Dublin Core was developed as a set of metadata elements that describe a particular resource, through the use of a limited group of base text fields. The idea behind Dublin Core was to create a digital library system that could cross different domains and platforms but always convey the same classification information. Its implementation makes cataloguing webpages easier and

The Simple Dublin Core is made up of the following fifteen rudiments, known as the Metadata Element Set:

Title – the designated name of the resource or page
Creator – the individual, company or service that created the resource
Subject – to describe the content of the resource
Description – a text description of the resource or page
Language – describes which language the resource is in
Publisher – describes which person, organisation or service made the resource available
Contributor – describes who contributed to the resource
Date – the date that the resource was created (or in some cases, made available)
Source – where the resource originally came from
Type – the categories and/or purpose of the resource
Format – self explanatory
Identifier – usually a set of numbers that apply to a system, ensures the resource is recognisable
Relation – a way of referencing to a resource
Coverage – most importantly covers where the resource came from
Rights – describes rights held over the resource or page

The Dublin Core is flexible in that these elements can be repeated and presented in any order you choose. Qualified Dublin Core comprises additional refined elements including ‘Audience’, using which you can specify which users would benefit from the resource’s contents (or who the resource was intended for).
