About MyVillage

MyVillage is the largest network of local entertainment city guides, covering 63 London areas and 23 major UK cities.

Our national network of sites provide local features, reviews, listings, events and social networking, where members can create events, groups and discussions, make friends, add music, photos and videos, and write reviews and blogs.

Users can book hotels and restaurants online, as well as find love, jobs and homes locally.

What makes us different?

Whilst other social networking sites focus on fostering global relationships, MyVillage is all about bringing people together - not just virtually, but in real life too.

Everyone who visits, joins and uses MyVillage has at least one thing in common - the place where they live, work or socialise.

MyVillage gives users the capacity not just to mirror their real life online, but to actually enhance it, by promoting events, creating groups, making friends, arranging dates and ultimately networking with people who hang out in their neighbourhood.

Whether you want to discuss a local issue, shout about a common cause, write or read reviews, or find out who's putting what on where - this is 'the' place to make the most of 'your' place.

How we got to where we are:

MyVillage was created in 1999 by Roifield Brown, as a way to connect with his local community in Notting Hill London. The site first launched under the guise of www.portowebbo.co.uk and served the neighbourhoods of Ladbroke Grove, Westbourne Grove, Notting Hill and Portobello - providing business listings, reviews, local features and forums, this comprehensive guide quickly gained a dedicated audience.

In 2000, local businessman Adam Cole bumps into www.portowebbo.co.uk whilst looking for a plumber. He immediately recognises it as a great concept and invests.

The company is rebranded as MyVillage and in 2001 the first suggestion of a network is born with the launch of sister sites, mykensington and mychelsea. Later that year the network expands radically, taking in all postcodes within central London. The content and technology continues to expand alongside the geographical reach, with additional forums, local news, event listings and online dating added to the fold.

Following resounding success and media accolades, in 2002 MyVillage goes national, launching 23 city sites throughout the UK. The network continues to add new functionality to the fold, via restaurant and hotel online booking, local classifieds and property search, and in 2008 MyVillage adds social networking to the platform.

Pimp your posts - add images, video, music samples/play lists, invite friends and share pages/posts

Invite everyone you know - 6 degrees of separation i.e. you might not know the editor of the guardian, but someone you know, might well know someone who knows someone etc etc.

Make MyVillage YOUR portfolio - MyVillage is a social network like any other BUT you have complete control over how you use it. Why not use your profile page as a portfolio of work. Upload videos and playlists, photos and even articles from other places. We don't mind.

Online Articles hints and tips

Short, sharp and concise: 300 words preview/review, 500 words feature/interview
Headings - The heading at the top of the page should make absolutely clear what the page contains or concerns. The text under the heading must not repeat the heading information (see redundancy, below right).

Subheadings - If the page text exceeds 300 words, subheadings will help the reader scan the page efficiently and happily.

The first paragraph should surmise the important facts and contain relevant key words for the entire article

Boldface - Depending on the content, words or phrases in boldface can help readers find what they want. Combining boldface and subheadings could lead to visual noise, so do not overdo it. Combining links and boldface text in the same paragraph could have the same unsightly result.

Lists - Numbered, bulleted or other indented lists help the reader make sense of the information on the page. In many print contexts, lists would look ugly and thus are not used. On Web pages, lists work well in almost all contexts. Like paragraphs, lists appeal more to the reader when they are short.

Brevity - Write tight. Omit all unnecessary words.

Sentence Structure - Be straightforward. While a meandering introductory clause may seem like a good idea to you, the reader might stop reading -- before she gets to the heart of your sentence.

Say What You Mean - Try saying it out loud before you write it. We tend to speak more directly than we write. We get to the point more quickly, too, when we can see the listener's eyes glazing over.

Redundancy - Reading the same information twice wastes a person's time
Short Paragraphs - A 100-word paragraph looks pretty long on a Web page. Long paragraphs send a signal to the reader: This will require effort. The writer expected you to have a lot of spare time. Sit down and read awhile. Short paragraphs send a different message: I'm easy! This won't take long at all! Read me!
Cross reference wherever possible, this allows us to push users around the sites and ultimately increases our page impressions i.e. link through to bars and restaurant listings, discussions, images, photos etc.
If creating an event, ensure that you include all the relevant information i.e. what, where, when (dates and times), website link
If promoting a local organisation/venue/business and providing a link, request a reciprocal link i.e. lots of links pointing at our site = good SEO

Content Suggestions:

Top 5: shopping/bars/restaurants/clubbing/spas and salons/Sunday slobbing/hidden gems/art and culture etc.

Local cause: profile of a local charity/organisation that is doing great work in your neighbourhood

Unsung heros: know a local bus driver or lollypop lady who is always there with a smile? Give them a shout out via myvillage

Up and coming: artists, bands, performers in your city who you tip for the top

Events: an underground club night, arts festival or interactive exhibition?

Mini area guides: Moseley (Birmingham), Northern Quarter (Manchester), Chapel Town (Leeds), Cold Harbour Lane (Brixton) etc.

And more (
