<p><font size="1" color="#FFFFFF"><b>Playgroups and Pre-School Provision</b>
<br>
Children attending playgroups and pre-school provision are able
to meet other children and play with them on a regular basis. They
are good places to meet other parents and they also enable parents
to be closely involved in their child's play activities. Most playgroups
and pre-school provision happily welcome children with a disability.
</font></p>
<p><font size="1" color="#FFFFFF">Activities include gluing and sticking,
painting, collage, printing, sand and water, play dough and clay,
dressing up, dolls, home corner, jigsaws, building bricks, large
toys such as a climbing frame, a slide, bicycles and ride-on toys,
nursery rhymes and a book corner. </font></p>
<p><font size="1" color="#FFFFFF">Most playgroups and pre-school provision
are only open during term-time. For mor information parents should
telephone or call in and speak to one of the adult leaders. Most
playgroups and pre-schools have waiting lists so it is a good idea
for parents to put their child's name down a few months before they
want them to start. </font></p>
<p><font size="1" color="#FFFFFF"><b>Pre-School Learning Alliance</b>
<br>
The pre-schools in this section are all members of Kensington and
Chelsea Pre-School Learning Alliance - PSLA. </font></p>
<p><font size="1" color="#FFFFFF">A committee of parents manages each
group and employs trained pre-school leaders to run the sessions.
Parents support the leaders by helping out at sessions on a rota
basis. They stay at the group until their children are settled and
help with fund-raising and choosing equipment. </font></p>
<p><font size="1" color="#FFFFFF">Pre-School Group Advisors are employed
to help the parents maintain good standards in the group. PSLA pre-schools
are for children aged from 2 years 9 months-5 years. The PSLA believes
in equal opportunities for all children regardless of background
or ability. These beliefs are expressed through staff training and
recruitment, play equipment and provision of positive images. </font></p>

<p><font color="#FFFFFF" size="1">Local Authority Services Nursery
Schools and classes provide education for children aged 3-4. They
give children the chance to develop learning skills and to mix with
children of the same age. Activities are varied and include sand
and water, outside play, matching and sorting and art and craft
activities. </font></p>
<p><font color="#FFFFFF" size="1">Often, more parents want nursery
places for their children that are provided. A decision will be
made on the basis of several factors: the number of places available
at the school applied to, the educational, medical and social needs
of the child and the nearness of the child's home to the school.
</font></p>
<p><font color="#FFFFFF" size="1">Parents should put their child's
name down with the school they prefer when he or she reaches his
or her second birthday. The age at which the child is actually admitted
depends on the number of places available. Three terms is usually
regarded as the minimum time children should spend in a nursery
school or class, though it is preferable for them to attend for
at least four terms. </font></p>
<p><font color="#FFFFFF" size="1">Nursery schools are totally independent
of primary schools. Nursery classes are an integral part of an infant
or primary school. Both types of facility provide either full-time
or part-time places or a mixture of both. It should be noted that
having a place at the nursery class does not automatically mean
the child will be able to enter the school itself, although this
often does happen. To make enquiries about putting a child's name
on the waiting list, parents should contact the secretary of headteacher
at the chosen school. </font></p>
<p><font color="#FFFFFF" size="1">An appointment can usually be made
to visit the school. Local Authority nursery education is free.
