Job Title:                           HEALTH ADVISER MANAGER

Grade:                               A & C 7

Accountable to:                 Clinical issues to the Consultant in GUM

Managerially:                     Acute Clinical Services Unit Manager

Job Summary:                   To work with the Health Advisers in developing a 
                                            Health advisers strategy, including managing 
                                            major health adviser projects and new initiatives
                                            within the service.

                                            To manage, supervise and develop the HA service          
                                            to ensure provision of Advice, information,   
                                            education, counselling and partner notification to
                                            patients diagnosed with an STI

                                            To provide pre test HIV discussion and post test
                                            discussion and/or counselling for people with HIV
                                            as appropriate within the multidisciplinary team.


Management responsibilities:

To supervise and develop the health adviser service, to ensure the provision of their key duties.

To act as a first line manager to health advisers, and co-ordinate their clinical supervision.

To provide regular ongoing management supervision to health advisers, to promote and encourage their professional development and implement a system of appraisal incorporating individual performance reviews for the health advisers.

To ensure staff work within their legal and professional responsibilities and work within appropriate guidance for good practice.

To recruit new health advisers to the service and provide induction, orientation and training programme for new staff.

To initiate, co-ordinate, implement and evaluate health advising policies, protocols through research and audit.

Liaise with other senior health advisers within the region/ nationally in order to standardise the quality of the health adviser service and to develop and maintain links with related health, social and educational services available in the area and to liaise as necessary with statutory and voluntary agencies.

To develop and maintain close working relationships with the appropriate medical and nursing staff within the clinic/ Trust and to attend, promote and represent health advisers at all multidisciplinary, departmental and other appropriate meetings.

To manage an appropriate teaching./ training programme for other health professionals, statutory or voluntary bodies as required.


Clinical responsibilities:
 To provide information to patients diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection, how they are acquired, transmitted and treated, and provide education  on preventing or minimising the risk of infection, providing a safe environment whereby patients can discuss their concerns and ask questions.

To provide pre and post HIV  counselling, and initial counselling of people diagnosed with HIV.

To provide comprehensive assessment of patients� other social, emotional or sexual difficulties and to follow up or refer  on, as appropriate.

To record interventions accurately and concisely in patient files and to keep statistics on all patient contacts and interviews to enable audit and evaluation of services.

To continue professional development and training by participation in regular supervision and staff appraisal and attendance and contribution to appropriate meetings within the Trust and at regional / national level.

To be aware of the confidential nature of the clinic and work within legal responsiblities and relevant guidelines for good practice.

To provide effective partner notification and ensure that patients are followed up adequately.
Liaise with other health advisers in GUM and exchange relevant information in order to facilitate  partner notification.

To take a lead in Sexual Health promotion work within the clinic and community and to take part in teaching programmes as required.

Any other duties that may be deemed necessary as part of the role.
