<p><font size="1">An Indian alternative medicine enjoying a surge
in popularity in Britain is under investigation following fears
over health risks.<br>
</font></p>
<p><font size="1">The Ayurvedic system, based on 3,000-year-old Indian
philosophy, has become one of the West's fastest-growing traditional
medicines after being linked to numerous celebrities including <b><a href="http://www.mynottinghill.co.uk/nottinghilltv/faces-madonna.htm">Madonna</a></b>,
Kate Moss, <b><a href="http://www.mynottinghill.co.uk/nottinghilltv/faces-music.htm#geri">Gerri
Halliwell</a></b> and Cherie Blair. One of Britain's leading Ayurvedic
gurus, Bharti Vyas, has repeatedly claimed that the Prime Minister's
wife consulted her before the birth of the Blairs' fourth child,
Leo, last year. The supermodel Christie Turlington launched a new
Ayurvedic skincare range in June last year, sold at Harvey Nichols,
the exclusive department store in Kensington.<br>

<p><font size="1">The system, which has 350,000 practitioners in India,
combines herbal treatments with meditation, lifestyle changes, diet,
spirituality and mental well being as part of a "whole body" philosophy.<br>
</font></p>
<p><font size="1">There is no suggestion that major brands such as
Ms Turlington's have caused problems. However, a series of cases
from around Europe of poisoning from other treatments containing
heavy metals and organophosphates have raised fears about the quality
of the herbs used.<br>
</font></p>
<p><font size="1">As a result, the Medicines Control Agency is to
ban several potentially lethal remedies and restrict the use of
many other treatments. Over the past 10 years, toxicologists have
reported hundreds of suspicious cases in Britain. The worst cases
included one man crippled by arsenic poisoning from a treatment
for eczema, skin lesions caused by treatments containing mercury,
and gastrointestinal problems. </font></p>
<p><font size="1">Last year, toxicologists at Guy's Hospital found
a man had been poisoned by steroids used illegally in an Indian
remedy. The unit also discovered aristolochia - a toxic plant extract
used in traditional Chinese medicine - in Ayurvedic preparations.
Aristolochia was banned last year after links to renal failure and
kidney cancer. U A spokeswoman for the agency said it will publish
a list of banned and restricted preparations this summer as part
of its effort to control alternative therapies. Dr </font></p>
<p><font size="1">Sathiya Moorthy, general secretary of the Ayurvedic
Medical Association (UK), said two types of Indian treatment which
use heavy metals will be banned and dozens more listed as suitable
only for prescriptions from registered practitioners. </font></p>
