<p><font size="1">From the youthquake of the Sixties to the leggy,
red-lipped Robert Palmer babes of the Eighties, the miniskirt has
always been associated with overt sexiness.</font></p>
<p><font size="1">Take the former Baywatch babe, Pamela Anderson,
as the type of bad-girl stereotype normally expected to wear one.
Teetering along to this year's glamorous Oscar parties, what did
she decide on for her outfit? Vintage couture, like any other actress
worth her double-page spread in In Style? No, Ms Anderson opted
instead for the most barely there of denim skirts together with
a white shirt that struggled to cover her most famous assets.</font></p>
<p><font size="1">Those five inches or so of frayed denim prompted
the queen of high-gloss glamour, Joan Collins, to label Pammy's
image as the "hooker on holiday" look, proof, if ever any was needed,
that this is one item of clothing that still provokes outrage. And
this, almost 40 years after inciting "angry bowler-hatted men with
rolled umbrellas" to beat on Mary Quant's shop window with fury
              back in the Sixties.</font><font size="1"><br>
              </font></p>
<p><font size="1">Being its great pioneer, Mary Quant is well-versed
in the meaning of the mini. She said in 1997 that the Sixties mini
was: "Wow, look at me. Isn't life wonderful! It was young, liberated
and exuberant and on the Pill. And it looked all girl. It was the
beginning of Women's Lib". The Nineties mini, on the other hand,
was "the same but different. It says, I've made it. It's sophisticated
and in charge; chairman-of-the-board stuff. It's sexy and very,
very female. It looks like Job Done for Women's Lib. And the heyday
              for grown-up women".</font></p>
<p><font size="1">Up and down, in and out of fashion, hemlines are
often seen as a social barometer. So how do we define the Noughties
mini? All girl, all woman, grown-up, playful, provocative, just
plain bad? In our postmodern times, it is, surely, whichever of
these the wearer wants it to be - that is one of the mini's greatest
              attractions.</font></p>
<p><font size="1">"It's almost inevitable that miniskirts came around
again," says Hazel Curry, buying manager for designer womenswear
at Selfridges. "The last significant trend in skirt lengths was
last year's knee- length ladylike chic style. Also, there's a strong
Eighties influence at the moment, with short, ra-ra styles. You
can't get away from them this summer - there are so many to choose
              from."</font></p>
<p><font size="1">And if you think this is one revival that's likely
to be here today and gone tomorrow, think again. The mini is heading
right back to where it started, according to Curry. "Miniskirts
will follow through into this autumn with a Sixties Courreges and
Cardin influence - just look at the Fendi and Prada collections
              for next season."</font></p>
            <p><font size="1">Sure enough, Fendi's Autumn/Winter show was an odyssey
of space- lab white, short slip dresses and knee-high boots worn
with loose, silver belts, while Prada's contribution to the trend
were black, thigh-length tunic tops worn over super-tight trousers.
If the disappearing skirt just isn't your type then take solace
              - miniskirts don't have to be worn with uneven, barely black 40
deniers, the type that create just the sort of slippery surface
that ensures your skirt ends up round your waist. They are a lot
              more versatile this time around.</font></p>
<p><font size="1">"There's the Hoxton look, with ankle socks and stilettos,
or with bare legs and vintage biker boots, and then there's the
really sky- high heels with opaque tights look," advises Curry.
              </font></p>
<p><font size="1">As enduring as the trend for the new mini might
be, those less than convinced by its current revival would do well
not to spend a fortune and head instead for the high street - this
is one item of clothing that reproduces well on a budget. H&M;'s
khaki version is military chic, especially worn with wrist cuffs
              and a sleeveless T-shirt.</font></p>
<p><font size="1">Because the mini is almost always tight-fitting
and aims to reveal as much leg as possible, then heels are the only
way to make not-so-coltish Tanya Strecker legs just that little
bit longer Or why not flout the old school rules by adding a tight
shirt, a four- inch tie and a sulky expression? That way, you won't
fail to get attention, which, after all, is what the miniskirt is
              all about.</font><font size="1"><br>
