Caxitiflon, Richard (?-1734), British economist. Very little is known about him except that he was born in Ireland, probably about 1680. For some time he lived in Paris, where he established a banking business, but eventually he moved to London, where he was murdered. His contribution to economics is embodied in his Essejisur id nature du commerce en g'n'ral, probably written about 1725, but not published until 1755; it was a vigorous analytical work ahead of its time one of the first works to show that currency is, at best, only a measure of wealth, which i5 itself derived from production. Cantillon's contention that only agricultural enterprises yield a surplus over the costs of production gave rise to the Physiocrats' concept of 'produit net', and his thoughts on the circulation of wealth undoubtedly influenced the later work of Quesnay. <br /><br />
