<p><font size="1">John Adams's Harmonium brings together texts by
the Englishman John Donne and the American Emily Dickinson. The
original overture to Benjamin Britten's early operetta, written
during his self-imposed wartime exile in the New World, is heard
for the first time at the Proms, in Colin Matthews's scoring.Matthews
himself provides the opening flourish to this year's season with
a specially commissioned fanfare. </font></p>
<p><font size="1">A host of leading young singers perform Vaughan
Williams's Serenade to Music (written for Henry Wood) to welcome
Leonard Slatkin to his first Proms season as the BBC Symphony Orchestra's
new Chief Conductor. Guy Johnston, who memorably won BBC Young Musicians
