Written by <a href="http://london.myvillage.com/user/DaniellaM">Daniella McNulty</a> <br/><span style="font-weight: bold;"><br/>SAATCHI GALLERY </span><br/>NEWSPEAK:<br/>BRITISH ART NOW<br/><br/>• Part One at The Saatchi Gallery 30th May - 17th Oct 2010<br/>• Part Two at The Saatchi Gallery 27th October - 17th Apr 2011<br/><br/>Having now visited NEWSPEAK part two twice in the last month, I can safely say that the turnaround of the Saatchi since part one has remained in the contemporary zone without much distinction between the two parts, but with both showcasing British Art Now in all its modern glory.<br/><br/>This new collection brings together Britain’s best up and coming artists, sculptors and conceptual designers (in Charles Saatchi’s opinion) and from the man who first brought us many other radical and culture-bending Young British Artists such as Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst, it promises to be an interesting pick’n’mix of artistic eye-candy from the start.<br/>From Juliana Cerqueira Leite’s giant stuffed ball of latex (“Oh”) to Jonathan Wateridge’s highly photorealistic style of painting (“Jungle Scene with Plane Wreck” etc), the Saatchi’s current exhibition ranges from wild experiments with mixed media (Graham Hudson’s fan-powered inflated bin bags, or “All My Exes Lives in Tesco’s”), via iconic yet surrealist sculptures (Steve Bishop’s “Christian Dior – J’adore (Mountain Goat)”) to the downright bizarre (Alexander Hoda’s “Pile Up”; a grotesque giant mound of polystyrene claws, limbs, chains and distorted pigs’ heads).<br/><br/>Tessa Farmer’s “Swarm” occupies the immediate left of gallery 3, a straight line from the Saatchi’s entrance. Both times I have made a beeline for this piece, as the concepts and ideas that flood from it go beyond the usual scepticism I have for contemporary art in its usual form (“I could have done that!”). Farmer’s miniature apocalypse is contained within a glass case, but threatens to burst out at any moment with the question, “How did she do that?”; a question I believe is often severely lacking from some modern art which relies too heavily on their explanations placards to have meaning.<br/><br/>It is true, however, that the bias of modern art to lean away from traditional Holbein-esque paintings qua Jonathan Wateridge, Gareth Cadwallader or perhaps Edward Kay, leaves a space whereby abstract pieces that are more open to interpretation seem to make less of a connection with onlookers (such as Dick Evans’ “Black Grape”; a towering silicon carbide wave or Dean Hughes’ “Shelves”). On the other hand, Newspeak part two simultaneously incorporates this movement away from conventional forms of artwork with interesting reinventions of orthodox styles, such as portraiture (Paul Johnson’s sister and brother and Maurizio Anzeri’s “Giovanni”) and landscape painting (Tom Ellis’ “The Dogs” and Toby Ziegler’s “Designated For Leisure”).<br/><br/>As a collection, however, trying to detect purposeful links between every single piece seems somewhat redundant if it takes meaning away from each particular. The Saatchi is currently featuring some of the greatest talent of contemporary British Art, and whether or not there is a Young British Artist (YBA) ‘winner’ among them should not be contended too hotly for otherwise the maelstrom of brilliant skills and ideas will be lost in the debate.
