Half of us thought it had been ditched a few years back when Andi Peters got his mitts on it. The other half correctly guessed that it had been lumped across to Sundays on BBC2, presumably showing to audience of one between church sermons and posh presenters stomping across the country in search of owls.<br><br>

Top of the Pops first appeared in 1964 and was broadcast from a converted church in Manchester. The presenter was DJ Jimmy Savile and the bands featured were The Rolling Stones, Dusty Springfield, the Dave Clark Five, The Hollies, The Swinging Blue Jeans and The Beatles – that weeks’ number one. The show was commissioned for six episodes but instead took off for 42 years – not a bad innings at all.<br><br>

Presenters usually hosted the intros between songs, trying to be professional whilst surrounded by kids jumping up and down to wave at the camera.<br><br>Top of the Pops was originally a Thursday night show, the treat for watching Tomorrow’s World first with your dad. Girl dancers Pans People and later Legs and Co were presumably the treat for Dad’s when watching Top of the Pops with their children. The dancers were there to keep the audiences attention for when the bands couldn’t appear or there was no promotional video to accompany the songs. Many bands took great pleasure in letting us know it wasn’t live – Oasis must surely get the trophy for taking the michael – Bonehead pretending to (badly) play a cello throughout ‘Whatever’ and Liam chewing gum throughout his performance of ‘Lyla’. Later TotP introduced a ‘live vocal to pre-recorded backing track’ policy, which had to be abandoned by the amount of truly dire performances by singers who couldn’t actually sing. The format scurried back to lip-synching as fast as a marathon running Savile, but the end was now in sight, in the form of a move to Friday nights.<br><br>

The problem with moving the show to Friday nights is that it effectively wiped out the older audience, who were either still at work or down the pub. Cue the younger audience and cue the rise of reality pop bands in the singles charts. The BBC say that the weekly programme could no longer compete with 24-hour music channels but did it ever really get the chance?<br><br>
