Camden council has pulled the plug on the popular
firework display amid fears over public safety in the event of an
emergency.

It follows advice from the Safety Advisory Group comprising the
Metropolitan Police, Fire Brigade, St John's Ambulance, all other
emergency services, Camden Council and The Royal Parks.

The main concern raised about the event planned for November 2 was
the control of large crowds. Last year's attendance topped 45,000
people which resulted in crowding around gates and some crushing
against emergency barriers.

This year there was a strong likelihood of even greater numbers,
possibly up to 60,000.

The cancellation will be a huge disappointment to local people and
people across London for whom the Primrose Hill Fireworks has become
an established feature of the London autumn calendar.

Until last week Camden had been gearing up towards
the display but strong safety advice has resulted in the late change

Camden Council is asking the community to join
its campaign for more police officers on the beat.

Councillor Barbara Hughes, Executive member for community safety,
is appealing to residents and local businesses to support the campaign
and ensure Camden gets the police officers it needs.

She said: "We know that crime is a major concern for local people
and tackling crime is our top priority. Camden is a large inner
London borough with three busy main-line stations, a thriving evening
economy and thousands of daily commuters and tourists. These factors
inevitably attract those intent on committing crime. We need higher
numbers of police on our streets to make a real impact on crime.

"We want residents and businesses to join our campaign and give
us their views on police numbers in Camden. You are the people who
live and work in Camden and experience the problems of crime firsthand
- your opinion counts. Let me know your views and I will make sure
the Metropolitan Police Authority hears what you have to say."

Last year, the council successfully lobbied for more police officers,
in response to changes in the way officers were allocated to boroughs.
As a result, an extra 91 police officers were secured for Camden.

Now, the council is stepping up its campaign and lobbying senior
figures from the police and Metropolitan Police Authority to make
Camden's case for more police. In addition, Camden has applied for
69 of the Met Police's 200 new Community Support Officers and will
continue to press for additional officers as they become available.
