<p><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">The American
artist Dan Flavin has often been associated with Minimalism, but he
himself often felt unhappy with the term, once joking that he thought
he was more of a 'maximalist', because he used minimum means for maximum
effect.</font></p>
<p><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">In the
best shows of Flavin's work he is somehow able to somehow make a room
feel completely filled by the careful positioning of a few of his trademark
fluorsecent strips, and hold our attention. And this show at the Serpentine
displays his work brilliantly.</font></p>
<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="1">Flavin
began using fluorescent light in the early 60's, and the simplicity
and systematic nature of his work meant that he came to be touted as
one of the chief proponents of minimalism. </font><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="1">The
serial repetition of form was similar to many of the strategies employed
by other American artists of the time including Carl Andre, Walter De
Maria, Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, Agnes Martin, and Robert Ryman.</font></p>

<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="1">Flavin's
work was always informed by a discussion of the spiritual in art. </font><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Forced
by his father to attend a Roman Catholic seminary, Flavin had cultivated
an educated rejection of traditional theology. </font></p>
<p><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Two of
his first fluorescent works of 1963 were dedicated to William of Ockham,
a medieval philosopher and founder of Nominalism. Flavin's invocation
of Nominalism, known in the more popular dictum that "no more entities
should be posited than are necessary" (Ockham's Razor), could be considered
a Rosetta stone for Minimalism. </font></p>
<p><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Flavin's
art neither rejects nor summons faith since the question of God is never
raised. For, art is matter and is, therefore, no proof of anything spiritual.
Flavin's icons and fluorescent works offer nothing less than a reconsideration
and deconstruction of art's past through both the systematic use of
form and light and the tool of irony.</font></p>

<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="1">In the
Serpentine single works or sympathetic groups of work are allowed spaces
to themselves. This brings out the architectural aspect of Flavin's
sculptures. Alone with only walls, floors and windows these fluorescent
tubes seem perfectly pitched, they are what they are, a collection of
light fittings grouped together in an empty room. </font></p>
<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="1">This heightens
both the comedy of the work, the fact that pieces are often given protentious
titles, when Flavin knows as well as us that they will appear incongruous,
and the strange beauty of all this strange ordinariness.</font></p>
<p><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">I found
the work strangely moving. Perhaps its something to do with Flavin creating
spaces rather than just making pieces of work, or maybe it's just that
we are with bathed in coloured light for a few moments.<br>
