For the first time since it was founded over 120 years ago, the County Surveyors’ Society (CSS) has chosen a strategic planner as its new President.
At
the CSS's annual general meeting earlier this month, John
Deegan, Strategic Director for Environment and Economy at
Warwickshire County Council, was inaugurated to this honorary
office which has, until now, always been held by an engineer.
John Deegan comments: “I am a planner by profession, and have served as a member of CSS since 1994 when I joined Warwickshire County Council as Director of Planning and Transport. The Society’s decision to appoint me as its President for 2006/07 reflects its role in representing local authorities with responsibility for Strategic Planning, Transportation, the Environment, Waste Management and Economic Development. This is an exciting and important time for the CSS: aspirations… improved communications with both our members and the outside world…development of new website…”
Founded in 1885, the County Surveyors’ Society membership is drawn from the four nations of the United Kingdom. Its members in England and Wales are responsible for providing professional services for 74% of the road network, 59% of the land area, and 42% of the population.
The aim of the CSS is to represent its members’ interests by responding to European and Central Government initiatives and consultations, promoting initiatives aimed at influencing government policy, as well as developing and sharing good practice.
