Route safety management and evaluation guidance
CSS funded research on Route Safety by consultants TRL Ltd that has led to TRL’s recommendations on guidance for practitioners, now published as TRL report PPR398, entitled Route Safety Management and Evaluation Guidance.
Route safety management has developed significantly in the UK over the past 10 years and now forms a key part of the road safety intervention strategy for many highway authorities. However, there are a variety of approaches undertaken by different authorities towards the development and implementation of route safety programmes. The report guidance is aimed at providing some direction for route safety management when planning future interventions to reduce the numbers of fatal and serious injuries on the roads, particularly along the strategic rural routes where the majority of road traffic collisions occur. Whilst there is some evidence to date of changing driver behaviours, the research has sought to identify the focus for developing a more consistent approach to future interventions which will both improve the safety of the roads and influence driver behaviours in ways that can be better understood. Further work will be needed on both these aspects – making roads and drivers safer - to ensure the continued reduction in the numbers of killed and seriously injured people.
